Outgoing Russian President Vladimir Putin will award the country's Badge of Honor to Chabad-Lubavitch Rabbi Yitzchak Kogan, director of Moscow's Bronnaya Synagogue Agudas Chasidei Chabad, for helping to stop a knife-wielding assailant in a January 2006 attack at the synagogue, according to Russia's Interfax news agency.
Student Yosef Kogan, the rabbi's son, will also receive an honor from Putin for wrestling 20-year-old Alexander Koptsev to the ground after he ran through the synagogue, attacking and injuring nine people.
Tried in the Moscow City Court on charges of attempted murder and incitement of ethnic hatred, Koptsev was sentenced in September 2006 to 16 years imprisonment.

I thought it said “Metal”, like 200 grains of lead.
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
I visited Bolshaya Bronnaya a few months after this attack. All three synagogues in Moscow are patrolled by security guards and visitors must pass through a metal detector.
The attacker first went to the Marina Roscha synagogue but changed his mind because there was already a metal detector in place there.
My son visited the U.S. and met with Abe Foxman in order to raise $50,000 to install metal detector in Bolshaya Bronnaya. Foxman turned him away, because he was preoccupied about Mel Gibson.

This seems like a PR move. Color me skeptical.
