Huckabee on Christ Ad Brouhaha: 'Paul is Dead'

December 18, 2007 3:07 PM

ABC News' Kevin Chupka Reports: Former Governor Mike Huckabee, R-Ark., had some fun Tuesday answering a question about a brewing controversy over his latest TV ad called "What Really Matters."

Huckabee is running a Christmas ad in Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina where the former Baptist minister invokes Jesus Christ -- the first 2008 Republican candidate to do so in a campaign ad.

In the ad Huckabee says that that at this time of year, "what really matters is the celebration of the birth of Christ and being with our family and our friends."

Some have suggested there is an image of a cross behind Huckabee's shoulder as he talks to the camera in the ad, but Huckabee dismissed that Tuesday.

"That was a book shelf behind me, a book shelf," Huckabee told reporters while campaigning in Houston, Texas.

Huckabee was asked if his language crossed the line between faith and politics: "Absolutely not," he said.

Huckabee went on to joke, to the delight of the reporters in the room, "I will confess this; if you play the spot backwards it says 'Paul is dead, Paul is dead, Paul is dead.'"

The Republican candidate likened the dissection of his Christmas campaign ad to rumors that Paul McCartney was killed in a car crash at the height of the Beatles popularity and replaced by a doppelganger, and that subtle clues were placed inside the group's music for years to come.

The bookshelf/cross image in the ad was most definitely subliminal. Once again, Huckabee lies.

Agreed. That's why January primaries are wrong. They are taking the Christmas season and replacing it with the silly season.

Neither of these two is even an actual story. The media is scraping the bottom of the barrel.

And having the primaries so close to Christmas and New Year's make politics even more unattractive. People will be discussing (and arguing) over politics when they should go to family events and New Year's parties and have fun.

I really hope both parties will come to their senses and push all the primaries back past February. That's still plenty early. Personally, I think they should push them back to March.

These are people who made "macaca" mean "something" and who noticed the word RATS in "bureaucRATS" but not "democRATS".

BOTH words scrolled by in the ad if I recall. I don't youtube on this computer and can check it later...

"That was a [1] book shelf behind me, a [2]book shelf," Huckabee told reporters...

If he denies Christ one more time, a cock will crow.

It would’ve been too obvious to put a real cross in the ad, so the bookshelf / cross image was inserted. How deviously clever.

If he denies Christ one more time, a cock will crow.

But it wasn't Christ behind him, it was a bookshelf.

If you look really close at the ad, you’ll see an empty suit.

Donahue said. . . "[S]ell yourself on your issues, not on what your religion is."

Bill, religion is one of the issues. That's why he made the ad. Who could deny that the candidates' various religions give you a pretty clear indicator of their philosophy and governing intentions?

There's Mitt (Mormon and financial genius); Rudy (cafeteria Catholic and somewhat unscrupulous DA); Huck (evangelical Protestant and speechifier); Fred (goes to church when he's visiting Mama); Osama-Obama (godless race cultist); and Hillary (victim of demonic possession).

“That was a book shelf behind me, a book shelf,” Huckabee told reporters while campaigning in Houston, Texas.”

What he left out....
that was carefully lit to highlight the cross image. Watch as it revolves around me and I eclipse it so that I become the focus of the picture.

Huckabee is a sleeze. Why not just admit its a cross and be proud of it? Lighting a shot like that does not happen accidentally. He should be proud to say yes it was a cross because Jesus is the reason for this season and I would not want anyone to forget that.
Instead we get a flip ...Paul is dead.
