Iran Receives Nuclear Fuel in Blow to U.S.
New York Times ^ | Decembr 18, 2007 | Helene Cooper

The United States lost a long battle when Russia, as it announced on Monday, delivered nuclear fuel to an Iranian power plant that is at the center of an international dispute over its nuclear program. Iran, for its part, confirmed on Monday plans to build a second such plant.

In announcing that it had delivered the first shipment of enriched-uranium fuel rods to the power plant, at Bushehr in southern Iran, on Sunday, Russian officials said that while the fuel was in Iran, it would be under the control of the International Atomic Energy Agency, the nuclear monitoring agency for the United Nations. Russia also said the Iranian government had guaranteed that the fuel would be used only for the power plant.

The Bush administration took pains not to criticize the Russian move publicly, even expressing support for outside supplies if that led Iran to suspend its nuclear enrichment program.

“If the Russians are willing to do that, which I support, then the Iranians do not need to learn how to enrich,” President Bush said Monday. “If the Iranians accept that uranium for a civilian nuclear power plant, then there’s no need for them to learn how to enrich.”

But from the American standpoint, the timing could not have been worse, coming just two weeks after the release of a United States intelligence estimate that concluded that Iran stopped its nuclear weapons program in 2003. The National Intelligence Estimate also concluded that Iran had not restarted its nuclear weapons program as of mid-2007, undercutting a central tenet of the Bush administration’s basis for maintaining international pressure against Iran.

While administration officials maintain that the intelligence estimate does not mean that the United States and its allies should ease the pressure,

Humanity, I fervently hope, will not come to rue this day, not bemoan Russia's vile geo-political act of perfidy for the dubious benefit Putin feels is worth the price, all of us will pay.

To watch the following video, a collection of nuclear explosions detonating in all its deathly horror, and then realize today's event places the trigger for such devices in the hands of the 3 M's of the Apocalypse, the Mad Mullahs of Mayhem, it really is frightening to no end.

I don’t how the US “lost a long battle”. I thought that Bush was onboard with the idea from the begining.

More of the "nuke Iran" agenda collapses around Team Bush.

No doubt, they are searching for fresh casus belli but their time is running out and the facts argue against their agenda for expanding pre-emptive war in the Mideast.

Who the he** in “Team Bush” stands for “nuke Iran”?
More isolationist propaganda from the Ron Paul paladins.

The arguments over nuclear bunkerbusters and other new weapons revolves around using them against Iran. North Korea is already a bust for their use as Bush has entered into negotiations with them.

The level of denial here over Bush administration objectives and proposed means is astonishing.

Incredibly biased report. But it’s the NY Times, so that’s redundant

He was and how else should Iran get their fuel rods? We certainly don't want them making them themselves. The NYTs once again is just falsely stirring things up.

Russkies selling fuel to the Iranians, to help with their bomb against Israel and the US....it’s like Tom Clancy except real.

Using nuclear tipped bunkerbusters, which simply enhance the penetration power isn’t “nuking” a country, which means nothing short of eradicating whole population centers with WMDs. By your logic the ammunition used with radioactive components of depleted Uranium is also “nuking”. No one in “Team Bush” (I guess you speak about the Administration, not keyboard-warriors on FR) stands for eradicating whole cities.

How sad you must be at the loss of this glorious opportunity to use "non-nuclear" nuclear bunkerbusters in Iran.

Those weapons were developed with particular targets in mind. Primarily, North Korea and Iran with their deep bunkers.
