As a solo pro-lifer over the years among my wife, my friends and journalists I work with I have been strengthened by knowing and learning from the late Henry Hyde on how to report on the degree to which this country can and is combating the culture of death from abortion to assisted suicide and the "futility doctrine" in a growing number of hospitals that certain lives are not worth living any more.
From 1975 to 2007, former U.S. Rep. Hyde, a force for life, was not only instrumental in limiting the number of abortions, he also voted for such measures the Family and Medical Leave Act and was vital in passing an American commitment to invest $5 billion for a five-year global program to curb the advance of HIV and AIDS.
Additionally, he supported the Women, Infants and Children's Nutritional Program, which lead House Democrat Barney Frank, who was not with Hyde on abortion, to tell The New York Times (Nov. 30) that the lawmaker from Illinois, "acted on the view that because he opposed abortion, that children would be born in difficult circumstances, and he felt an obligation to help them."
Hyde and I got to know each other in the 1980s, when I was reporting often on the decisions by an increasing number of parents and their physicians to deny medical treatment (and eventually life itself) to handicapped infants. In 1984, during a bitter debate in the House, Hyde championed an amendment to a bill extending the Child Abuse and Treatment Act.
This amendment, vigorously opposed by House liberals, would broaden the definition of child abuse to include the denial of medical treatment or nutrition to infants born with life-threatening conditions.

Henry Hyde would have made a good President.
Henry Hyde was Pro-Life in every aspect, a truely great man, who is now enjoying his Eternal Reward.
Nat, though a professed atheist, is the sort of Journalist we will miss greatly in America, just as the pro-life cause already misses Representative Henry Hyde. No longer does the Jornalism profession have integrity because it has become such an advocacy for liberalism and leftist democrat agenda. Nat is that pure Journalist-Reporter type who the Founders had in mind when they extended such protection to the press in an Amendment to the Constitution. He is pro-life because it is the only position that makes sense for the survival of the species. He’s also a very adept writer.
Sorry for pointing out the obvious, but Henry Hyde was a hypocrite. That guy cheated on his wife for years in the 60s and had character problems during the S&L scandals. He might have a been a good guy in some areas, but in many others I considered him damaged goods.
Indeed. Thanks for the ping!

Just in case...ping
Got all the logs out of your own eyes?
Hyde may have been an adulterer, but how did that make him a hypocrite?
Which of these people at the last Judgment could be described as being "merciful"? Which of them could truly be described as having "eyes that see"?
Jesus once called His disciple Nathaniel "a true Israelite, in whom there is no guile."
Even if Nat still claims to be an atheist, I can't agree with that label. He's obviously one who honors the Image and Likeness of God.
Gunservative, if we had a detailed video of everybody's private lives in the 60's (or 70's or...whenever), we might ALL be considered damaged goods.
“Henry Hyde would have made a good President.”
He sure would have.
Somebody can say they're "pro-life" or "anti-abortion" but when they go and wreck the lives of others around them through adultery and causing other marriages to crumble, that's not pro-life. I'm not talking about other adults. I'm talking about the children involved here, Hyde's and the families he helped wreck. And all so he could get a little sex on the side because he was a big and powerful guy. Fooey. I don't care if the guy cured cancer, I have no time for adulterers.
