OCALA, Fla. -- A 10-year old Ocala girl brought her lunch to school and a small kitchen knife to cut it. She now faces a felony charge after being arrested. The school and the sheriff's office disagree on the reason for the arrest.
School officials say the 5th grader was brown-bagging it. She brought a piece of steak for her lunch, but she also brought a steak knife. That's when deputies were called.
It happened in the cafeteria at Sunrise Elementary School. The 10-year-old used the knife to cut the meat.

Surely Child Protective Services will now want to inspect the parents home for more unsecured deadly steak knives.
SWAT needs to be called in.

She now faces a felony charge after being arrested - it is a felony to have a steak knife?

“Zero Tolerance” is amok by definition. Everybody cheers it at first, cuz we’re gonna kick some “bad guy” ass. And then the reality of it sets in.

It’s a felony to bring a “weapon” into a school, I assume.

"it is a felony to have a steak knife?"
Not sure, but I know having one at a gun fight is a capital offense.

“... a steak knife could easily inflict serious damage if used as a weapon.”
So could a compass (the kind used to draw circles).

All that she needed to say was that she wanted to use it on George Bush. Not only would she have escaped punishment, but the publik scewl teechurz would have given her all A’s this year.

In the early 70s I wore a 4” Buck folding hunter on my belt to school every day.
Never once thought of it as a weapon, and nobody every asked me about it.

from the article: "Anytime there's a
weapon on campus, yes, we have to report it and we aggressively report it because we don't want to take any chances, regardless,"
when is a steak knife just a steak knife and not a weapon?????

Arrested for brandishing a deadly weapon?
At there's no report of her being tazered in the following assault.
For the love of G_d, if you care for your children and there's any way this side of the grave you can possibly do it. Home School them!

"And we didn't handcuff her or treat her like a criminal. But, we took her to the assessment center to be assessed," said Capt. James Pogue, Marion County Sheriff's Office.
I assess that there's a lot of dumb***es running this place.

To the viewing audience—are your children still attending the state run looney bins?
If so, why are you complaining about the policies you subject your little ones to?
Home school/private school (you do get what you pay for). Vote. Pull your children out the mainstream (remember, all the salmon that swim upstream are on a oneway trip!).
Education, however you look at it, IS about control-just who the controllers are is the variable....
God bless us in spite of ourselves...

They have a blanket rule and they must follow procedure for everyone. Publik scewls can’t make exceptions. The parents of children who brought knives to school to do harm would raise holy hell about double standards. Most of all, making everyone follow a blanket rule reinforces the socialist agenda. Trust me, i m a publik scewl teechur.

I used to think that a good way to bring about the repeal of stupid laws would be to strictly enforce them to create a backlash. Having seen where zero-tolerance is going, I gave up on the notion.
One of the inherent strengths of liberalism and stupidity (but perhaps I repeat myself) is that they are both immune to the reductio ad absurdum argument.

Ask for a trial by jury.
I don't know if that would help you. After all, it was a jury that actually indicted the Duke Lacrosse players.
