Not to get all technical with Color Temps and degrees Kelvin but as any Photographer who has ever taken a picture indoors lit by incandescents (and no flash) with 'Daylight film' know - THEY have the "yellowish tint", not fluorescents. Gonna stock up on enlarger bulbs?
This horseshit is gonna destroy what's left of the enlarger market, and wipe out the home darkroom.

If our government could find a way to “improve” TP for 5 dollars a roll, I’ve no doubt they wouldn’t try. Then they would have the gall to sell it as cheaper in the long run.
To: Don Joe
I'll tell you something else to expect -- people will start using Coleman lanterns indoors -- because they put out "incandescent" light (it's not electric, but it IS incandescent). There will be a lot more housefires, lives lost, etc., because people will be using FLAME lighting more and more, as the ubiquitous, CHEAP, lightbulb is taken away from them. You are tendering this as a serious prediction? Come on.

I've been using these things for a while, and this just plain is a lie. I bought a G.E. three pack just to try them. Right on the package it states, "lasts 5 years", I'm keeping the package and the receipt.
It also states right on the package, "26 watt (picture of their bulb) = 100 watt (picture of regular bulb)" I am no dummy and know that 26 does not equal 100, but still wanted to try them. and my belief was affirmed - 26 does not equal 100.

They're not really lying about the light output - just shading the truth a bit. The light output from a fresh CF 26w (AFTER IT WARMS UP FOR A COUPLE OF MINUTES) is about the same as an incandescent. However, as the CF bulbs age their light output drops, and some of the older ones I have around (I've been using these things for a couple of years) put out LESS light than an incandescent. They also tend to develop a very annoying 60 cycle hum. The other problem is that the phosphors they use in most of them are more yellow in cast (lower color temperature) than incandescents. I suspect the reason is that these phosphors are the most efficient, so if you like yellow light - like a really bright oil lamp, they're great, but if you're looking for a bluer light, then they don't fit the bill. Incandescent is pretty yellow, but these are even more yellow. They manufacture daylight CF bulbs, but at the prices I've seen on them
$123 for 5, they will remain untested in my household

Modern florescent bulbs are good technology. The old incandescent has had its day. Time to look to more efficient technologies. Then the market should be able to sort it out, right?

Last I saw these new bulb also wont work with a dimmer switch or motion light so I guess plenty of switches and fixtures will need to be replaced.

Please read the posting by occupied ga.
My experience:
The bulbs don’t tolerate heat or cold. They burn out very fast when used outside or in certain fixtures where their heat doesn’t dissipate. When they burn out, they literally burn out, with a fizz, a pop, a spark, and smoke. Doesn’t sound very safe to me.
I have some now which look real nice - almost like normal bulbs. But they are real dim when you first turn them on, especially when the temperature in the room is below 62. They take about 30 seconds to reach a useable brightness.
I know what’s going to happen. The powerful, know-it-all government will force us to switch. This is the same government which gave us toilets which need to be flushed 6 times before they do what toilets are supposed to do. The same government which gave us “airport security”.
To: Libloather
Great, the same Congress that mandated we use toilets that don’t work is going to make us use light-bulbs that don’t work as well.

January 2008 cannot get here soon enough for me. George Bush has got to go. He has done more harm to the conservative movement, and to freedom, than any recent president. He has fought a good war on the Ismo murderers. However his spending, his anti border crap, his globalizing of the USA into the North American union, this type of crap has totally turned me against him. I am sick of him. I am tired of him. It is time for him to go. Daddy was VP for 8 years, then prez for 4, then Klinton for 8 and junior for 8. 20 years of Bushes and 8 klintons and now we may face 4 to 8 more of the Klintons. Enough is enough. American has more families in it than just these two. Wake up America. Get off your fat asses before it is too late. Individuals like Bush and Hillary are going to destroy the Republic. More stupid laws. More money spent on crap. Way to go Jorge. I wish I had voted for someone else in the republican primaries way back in your beginning. You tricked me twice.

It will be along time before I buy those stupid compact fluorescents. I vastly prefer the light given off by incandescents. I use regular light bulbs and full spectrum ones. I use regular 40” fluorescents in garage and full spectrum fluorescents 40” in kitchen

If anyone has decorative bulbs in any hanging light fixture (candelabra base) they’d better get to buying all the spares they’ll need while they still can. I don’t know of any replacement type other than incandescent for the clear candle-flame looking 25, 40 or 60 watt bulbs that go in chandeliers and other decorative hanging fixtures.
To: Libloather
Ok, time to start hoarding those bulbs.
To: newzjunkey
The old incandescent has had its day. No, they have not. They give off heat. In certain circumstances, this is desirable and in others, essential. See post #23 for only a few examples.

There is a better bulb and it’s coming up fast. The LED will take the field. More efficient, lasts longer and bright. Right now they are expensive and not quite bright enough -— the technology is evolving rapidly.
Next year several car manufacturers will have them for headlights. Has nothing to do with glowbull warming, they are just better more efficient lights.
