I always thought it was a slew of bad news...I checked it out...dictionary.com says either slew or slue....no connection to slay either way though.

You're correct, it's 'Slew'.
(And I have a different Dictionary extension with my Firefox.)

According to my dictionary slew is preferred, slue is more of a nautical term.
