A homeschooling mom in Utah has been ordered by a judge to enroll her children in a public school district within 24 hours, and have them in class tomorrow, all because of a paperwork glitch that very well could be the fault of the district.
The mother, Denise Mafi, told WND that she already has enrolled her children in the district, under the threat from Judge Scott Johansen, who serves in the juvenile division of the state's 7th Judicial District, that he would order her children taken away from her.

It seems that an affidavit she faxed to the local school district for the 2006-2007 school year, documenting her homeschooling plans, was lost by the district. So when she went to court with her juvenile son to have the charges dismissed (under a case held in abeyance procedure) stemming from a clash among children, she suddenly was presented with four counts against her for failing to comply with the state's compulsory education requirement.
She thought she was meeting the court's demands earlier when she enrolled her two youngest children in classes, and put her two older children in an online curriculum connected to the public school.
"Well everything fell apart in court today. I had to enroll my two oldest in public school. They start on Monday. If I didn't the judge said I would lose custody of my children. He threw out the plea and we go to trial on January 9th. I have NO CHANCE with this judge. He will find me guilty. He already has. So I will probably be spending some time in jail. Please pray for my children,"

Warning to all homeschoolers: Get a written receipt!
Teachers would like us to think of government schools as warm and fuzzy places. In reality, though, they are like the movie "Gremlins".
"Compulsory government schooling" means that government employees have the power to send out armed police, court orders, and foster care workers. If the parent or child refuses to cooperate, armed police will arrest and imprison them. If they were foolish enough to seriously resist, the police will kill them. ( Real bullets in those guns on the hip!)
Hm...When thought about in this what the image of polished apples on the teacher's desk changes a bit, doesn't it? More like the apple offered by the wicked witch to Snow White.
The parents do have an out though! They can **ransom** their kids from the government school gremlins by paying private school and homeschooling expenses. It seems though that in this woman's case it would have been better to send the "ransom" notice by registered mail, or in person with a demand for a written receipt.
It is too bad. the status of the dad is unclear in this article. My friends in Utah say that judges in that state are very hard on single moms. When that mom says, "lose custody", I suspect that it means the dad will take over.
You would think a conservative state like Utah would not be so Stalinist regarding homeschooling
Then again, maybe Utah is no longer conservative. Salt Lake has liberals running it, and the Governor supports illegal alien rights over Americans rights (in state tuition for illegals)
Hopefully this homeshcool dilemma is resolved. Many of my nieces and nephews are homeschooled in Florida and I never heard of pre-approved lesson plans required by the local school district
(Don't we?)
Utah will vote overwhelmingly for ANY REPUBLICAN, but I’m not sure most of them know what “conservative” means.
Utah is probably the biggest nanny State of all the red States. Utahans, in some respects, are quite socialistic, and think it takes a village to raise a child. Many would easily follow a Theocracy.
I’ll have to see what background information I can find about the judge.
Liberals can’t brainwash kids if they’re home schooled.
Land of the Free my ass.
HSLDA membership is a must if someone wants to homeschool their children. Around $100 per year for some of the finest legal representation in that field. I can't see any reason a homeschool family wouldn't join.
We've never had a problem, but you hear of people who have. Membership in the HSLDA can be a blessing, but many families don't want to spend the extra money.

I just posted the link for everybody to see more comments.
I’m sure it will be posted a few more times today as the sun moves around the earth.
Sometimes a good story will be posted about four times on the News / Activisum only view, some only two or three threads apart.

My Utah friends are amazingly and blindingly trusting of government as well.
They see government schooling in the warm and fuzzy way that teachers would like us to imagine **compulsory** government schooling. .....But,,,,compulsion means real police power with real bullets in those guns!
If a taxpayer refuses to support this, armed sheriffs will sell his home and business at auction. If the taxpayer were to resist, he will be imprisoned. If he were to seriously resist, police bullets will kill him.
The same will happen to any parent who resists the government school workers as well. Just ask the lady in this article, she knows this. If she resists, the government will take her children away. If she seriously resists, they will imprison her and maybe even kill her.
Aren’t government schools great! Just makes me want to run out, buy and apple, polish it, and place it on some government teacher’s desk. ( barf!)

The article isn’t clear, but it I get the feeling that she is a single mom on the financial edge.
Ouch! (OK, that might be true up in Orem, but down here in Mapleton, where gun ownership is darn near compulsory, we have much less of that type of problem)
