A Vietnam veteran elected to the U.S. House at the age of 32, Rep. Duncan Hunter might be the most "Reagan-esque" candidate among a field of Republican presidential hopefuls claiming the Reagan mantle.
Like his political hero, Hunter, R-Calif., is and has been a hawk and leads the fight for more resources for the military.
Although he doesn't agree with President Bush all the time, he has backed the president on every Iraq vote. He silenced the war critics two years ago when he introduced a resolution calling for the deployment of troops to Iraq to end immediately. He opposed the resolution but made his point that the majority of House members supported the war. His resolution was defeated, 403-3.
Hunter, 59, plans to retire at the end of his current term, but until then, he's likely to continue to be a force in debate over Iraq.
Hunter, whose son has served in Iraq, chaired the House Armed Services Committee when Republicans controlled the House and now serves as its ranking minority member.
He's a reliable conservative vote on social and fiscal issues. On trade issues, he's more of a populist and wants to keep U.S.-developed technology out of the hands of foreign manufacturers. He opposed the North American Free Trade Agreement and the normalization of trade relations with China.
Hunter, whose district includes eastern San Diego, is a proponent of building fences along the Mexican border.
Hunter has campaigned in Iowa but does not have a campaign operation in Iowa and is not showing in pre-caucus polls.
He is not just a reliable vote on social issues, he is one of the most aggressive anti-abortion advocates in DC.
He also has fought the gay agenda much harder than his GOP colleagues.
And he is not just a reliable vote on fiscal issues. He is a tax cutting hawk, offering up dozens of bills to slash taxes in just about every area.
And his trade policy is animated by our national security. Seeing US companies 'partner' with Chinese PLA front companies and hand them our technology is unforgivable treachery to Hunter.

Frankly, I’m not looking for another Reagan. He certainly was far from perfect, and made some mistakes that we are paying for today.
True. One of his biggest was pushing the 1986 amnesty. His friend Duncan Hunter told him it was foolish and fought to derail it.
As a brand new U.S. CITIZEN (just sworn in at the Oath Ceremony Fri. Dec. 14/07 in Concord NH ) I will be excited and PROUD to cast my very first vote ever for Duncan Hunter in the NH Primary on Jan. 8th !!!!!!!!!
Hunter’s record is CONSISTENTLY CONSERVATIVE. He is the no-nonsense common sense candidate ! I feel that I will not have to sacrifice any of my principles to vote for him.
GO HUNTER !!!!!!!!
It certainly wasn’t all bubblegum and puppy dogs... But given that I’m staunchly in favor of no limitations on the Second Amendment, and pro-life, the field of candidates on the Republican side is pretty narrow. Duncan Hunter could lay claim to the Mickey Mantle, and if keep supporting the things important to me (and, I believe, important to his nation) I won’t care.
It’s about time. He’s the most like Reagan and has been about the only one who hasn’t been telling us about it.
Welcome to citizenship. Congrats.
You are making, by far, the best choice.
Which country did you come from, BTW?
But but but ...we just heard from Ed Rollins that Huckleberry had the “Reagan mantle.” That poor mantle sure gets around. It will need a good drycleaning by the end of the campaign.
This was POORLY written. It doesn’t make it clear that he is running for the office of the Presidency.
Even this indirect reference:
>>>Duncan Hunter might be the most “Reagan-esque” candidate among a field of Republican presidential hopefuls claiming the Reagan mantle.<<<
Gets canceled out by this:
>>>Hunter, 59, plans to retire at the end of his current term, but until then, he’s likely to continue to be a force in debate over Iraq.<<<
And this statement makes no sense after reading about him retiring:
>>>Hunter has campaigned in Iowa but does not have a campaign operation in Iowa and is not showing in pre-caucus polls.<<<
Thank you and congratulations!
Canada.
“Its about time. Hes the most like Reagan and has been about the only one who hasnt been telling us about it.”
Cripplecreek, you are absolutely right !!!
He doesn’t make that claim, he’s too modest. Though others certainly make it on his behalf.

BUMP.
Pretty soon the - Yeah But Hunter Voted For This... blah, blah - FReepers will show up.
Huck’s gonna fall hard
I just wish he has better communication skills and didn’t come across as so dour. The unpleasant truth today is that the conservative candidate is not only running against their opponent, they are also running against the whole MSM
who will do and say anything to present them in a bad light.
Being able to cut through the MSM’s filters is now absolutely mandatory for a conservative to be effective.
Everyone may have a rosebud sled; but Duncan Hunter IS the one that Reagan sent to Europe to bring them on board with Strategic Defense Initiative. AND, he succeeded.
