WASHINGTON (AP) - House Speaker Nancy Pelosi lashed out at Republicans on Thursday, saying they want the Iraq war to drag on and are ignoring the public's priorities. "They like this war. They want this war to continue," Pelosi, D- Calif., told reporters. She expressed frustration over Republicans' ability to force majority Democrats to yield ground on taxes, spending, energy, war spending and other matters.
"We thought that they shared the view of so many people in our country that we needed a new direction in Iraq," Pelosi said at her weekly news conference in the Capitol. "But the Republicans have made it very clear that this is not just George Bush's war. This is the war of the Republicans in Congress."
Asked to clarify her remarks, Pelosi backed off a bit.
"I shouldn't say they like the war," she said. "They support the war, the course of action that the president is on."
"And that was a revelation to me," she said, "because I thought the American people's voices were soand still areso strong in this regard."
Pelosi, who opposed the U.S.-led invasion from the start, said the war was "a catastrophic mistake."
Despite being forced to make concessions on multiple fronts, Pelosi said Democrats have been fiscally responsible and attuned to the public's concerns. As a result, she said, voters will reward Democrats in next year's presidential and congressional elections.
Democrats "set a high water mark" on many bills, she said. "Where we have to come to is a different place," thanks to the "political reality of not having a president of the United States. And nothing speaks more clearly to Democratic victories in the next election than when you see this is what is possible."
In response, House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, said in statement: "Republicans have stood on principle to protect current and future generations of Americans, whether it polled well or not. The success our troops are having in Iraq today is proof positive that our stance was the right one."

Then hypocrats like terrorism.
John Edwards even said it’s all a mere bumper sticker slogan.
Are you sitting down?
It is sheets Byrd.
Liberals like to use words like pro-war, anti-choice and shamefully the media and even some conservatives buy into it.
IF we would fight back and call them pro-terrorist, pro-murder everytime they say these idiotic things including pro-war...
oh nevermind, it wouldn’t help one bit.
But I still use it everytime an idiot opens their mouth around me about Bush and Cheney being “pro-war” or our troops being blood-thirsty, nonetheless.
It was when the picture was made!
God help us
I’m all broken up about that man’s rights.
.454 casull developed 1957, announced to the public 1959 v.s. Dirty Harry released 23 December 1971.
Will happily admit it's the worlds most powerful commonly available and well known handgun....
Yeah, the Democrats are the ASS party (Abortion, Sodomy and Surrender).
Nasty Nancy’s majority did not run on withdrawing from Iraq. Only after the election did she conclude it was an antiwar vote. This is her major mistake.
In 2008, Dems will have to run on her record of surrender and high taxes. Properly exploited, Republicans could retain the White House and pick up a few congressional seats.
We should get down on our knees and thank God daily for nasty Nancy. She’s a godsend to the right although I wish she was on TV more. Even when trying to sound reasonable, she comes off as a dimwit.
Apparently Nancy likes waterboarding too...
Actually true, but in this context.
A recent Rasmussen Poll found Americans surveyed like the Iraq war more than this congress.
Maybe why Madam Pelosi is upset?
I’m starting to like this liberal congress-they haven’t gotten anything done. I don’t have a big problem with Congress NOT passing any bills.
Huh? Come again? This incomprehensible sentence proves she's incompetent ... which is why I'm all for keeping her right where she is, losing to Bush all day, every day!
LOVE theline and I really love the movie. It’s one of those little gems that Hollyweird makes so few of these days. It is such a happy day for me to find another soul that appreciates that line. Thank you for making my day.
A Republican in San Francisco?
It must be lonely....
I believe they have their meeting in a phone booth. SF Republican - are you or is it the other guy - who is the Chairman.
(The town I lived in for 4 years was Northampton, Mass. I think if you compare SF to Northhampton — ‘The SanFrancisco of the Connecticut Valley’, I think SF would be better. The democrat town head was a MAN HATING LESBIAN.)
So whos fourth in line??
Are you sitting down?
It is sheets Byrd.
