WASHINGTON (AP) - House Speaker Nancy Pelosi lashed out at Republicans on Thursday, saying they want the Iraq war to drag on and are ignoring the public's priorities. "They like this war. They want this war to continue," Pelosi, D- Calif., told reporters. She expressed frustration over Republicans' ability to force majority Democrats to yield ground on taxes, spending, energy, war spending and other matters.
"We thought that they shared the view of so many people in our country that we needed a new direction in Iraq," Pelosi said at her weekly news conference in the Capitol. "But the Republicans have made it very clear that this is not just George Bush's war. This is the war of the Republicans in Congress."
Asked to clarify her remarks, Pelosi backed off a bit.
"I shouldn't say they like the war," she said. "They support the war, the course of action that the president is on."
"And that was a revelation to me," she said, "because I thought the American people's voices were soand still areso strong in this regard."
Pelosi, who opposed the U.S.-led invasion from the start, said the war was "a catastrophic mistake."
Despite being forced to make concessions on multiple fronts, Pelosi said Democrats have been fiscally responsible and attuned to the public's concerns. As a result, she said, voters will reward Democrats in next year's presidential and congressional elections.
Democrats "set a high water mark" on many bills, she said. "Where we have to come to is a different place," thanks to the "political reality of not having a president of the United States. And nothing speaks more clearly to Democratic victories in the next election than when you see this is what is possible."
In response, House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, said in statement: "Republicans have stood on principle to protect current and future generations of Americans, whether it polled well or not. The success our troops are having in Iraq today is proof positive that our stance was the right one."

pelosi reminds me of magnum force...the scene where clint eastwood is interviewing potential cops, and a woman comes in for the interview....”that’s very stylish” and “but if you die your partner dies too, and that’s a helluva price to pay for being stylish”...the dems did the stylish thing by putting a poor leader in power just because she is a woman...and now they are paying the price for being stylish....
She needs to get out more. This is what happens when you only listen to those that agree with you. You begin to think everyone thinks the way you do.
“...I thought the American people’s voices were soand still areso strong in this regard.”
Yes Nancy, it’s called representative government. WE elected President Bush.... NOT you and your idiot friends!
“We thought that they shared the view of so many people in our country that we needed a new direction in Iraq,”
Another favorite Dem/Lib tactic...selective polling.
I take serious exception with this nutball’s characterization of those of us who support the war effort. In my experience, the greatest lovers of peace are those who have witnessed the horrors of warfare and the inevitable carnage that results. For this dimwit to use these words merely clarifies for me the stance of the liberal Democrats who blame America first for all the world’s ills, and who lamely insist that dialog is the way to solve differences.
I’m not against diplomacy. But, in the case of Islamofascism, it’s not an option. You cannot hope to negotiate to any degree of success with any group that values death over life, and can call on over 1300 years of barbarism to support their celebration of martyrdom in the name of their ‘prophet’.
It’s time to take these people at their word. And respond...forcefully and in terms they will clearly understand.
My lord, but she’s an idiot. Just a gum-flapping, no-brain, dumbsh*t. If a Republican talked like she does, he would be (justifiably) slammed to the curb.
Yeah, but unlike Nancy, you are correct.
"You're a good woman, Madame Speaker. A good woman always knows her limitations."
Don't get me started on Dirty Harry quotes. My favorite scene in that movie is when Hal Holbrooke pulls his gun on Eastwood and Callahan looks at him and says "First time?"
theDentist: “Pelosi/Dems LOVE Terrorists”
Yea I know what you mean. I just can't resist though: My favorite:
Harry Callahan: I know what you're thinking. "Did he fire six shots or only five?" Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself. But being as this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself a question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?
Punk: I gots to know.
And Democrats “like” defeat
Harry: Can I make a statement, Lt.?
Lt: Go ahead.
Harry: Your mouthwash aint cuttin' it.
She is such a @#$%^! maybe that is why she has 18% approval.
“Democrats like killing babies”
So who’s fourth in line??
Or Dustin Hoffman in Confidence: “Stylish gets ‘ya killed!”
Too bad it’s not the most powerful handgun in the world....
It’s a small difference, but a difference.....
"And that was a revelation to me," she said, "because I only listen to people who agree with me prior to hearing what I say."
Fixed it for you Nancy.
