This is Chapter 13 of the new book To Set the Record Straight: How Swift Boat Veterans, POWs and the New Media Defeated John Kerry, written by yours truly and The Shrew. It tells the story of how Freepers exposed Dan Rather's fraudulent National Guard documents story during the 2004 presidential campaign. The book-formatted version, with footnotes, can be found at the link.

The defining moment of this website. God bless Buckhead. It truly was “the shot heard round the Internet.”

There are some strange, and to me, still mysterious things, certainly unexplained things (sorry, couldn't resist) that happened about how [the story] got attacked and why, even before the program was over. I think it was true of a lot of news organizations, unaware of not knowing enough of how quickly bloggers could strike. The facts of the story were correct. One supporting pillar . . . was brought into question. To this day, no one has proven whether it was what it purported to be or not. -- Rather

Rofl. "When bloggers strike..." sounds like another good cartoon caption.

Poor guy, in terminal denial, still whining about the 'facts' being correct.

Thanks for putting everything together.

I am currently reading your book. It is a powerful and enlightening exploration of "the rest of the story" of the battle over the exposure of the Kerry infamy and the heroic actions of the SwiftVets. Congratulations on a great piece of work.

To all Freepers: I highly recommend this book--To Set the Record Straight.

Why couldn’t a story like this break during the FR fund drive. We’d double donations overnight.
