WASHINGTON - Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee, an ordained Southern Baptist minister, asks in an upcoming article, "Don't Mormons believe that Jesus and the devil are brothers?"
The article, to be published in Sunday's New York Times Magazine, says Huckabee asked the question after saying he believes Mormonism is a religion but doesn't know much about it. His rival Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, is a member of the Mormon church, which is known officially as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The authoritative Encyclopedia of Mormonism, published in 1992, does not refer to Jesus and Satan as brothers. It speaks of Jesus as the son of God and of Satan as a fallen angel, which is a Biblical account.
A spokeswoman for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said Huckabee's question is usually raised by those who wish to smear the Mormon faith rather than clarify doctrine.

Sure there are, Democrat's are the winners.
I will try to post the first hour of Glenn’s show on FR later this evening then for everyone to hear. :-)
So why isn't it an honest question? It seems that Mormon source documents are at best inconsistent on this issue. Since when is inconsistency not a reasonable grounds to ask for clarification?
I'm not sure that strategically this is a wise move on Huckabee's part but the question seems perfectly legitimate. If Mitt Romney is the nominee, he is going to get a lot tougher questions about Mormonism than this.
While I dont believe in the tenets of your faith as I understand them, I believe wholeheartedly in your right as Americans to hold whatever beliefs you choose without being subject to calculated ridicule by someone who aspires to the highest office in the land. America was established by the Founding Fathers to be an open, pluralistic, religiously-tolerant society. Huckabee has proven himself unworthy of that legacy.Spot on, LadyNavyVet. Your post makes me proud to belong to this forum.
I can spell them both.
I also know the difference between a radio host I can turn off and a candidate for President of the United States.
It will be interesting to see the complete article and the context, but this isn't an electoral issue.
Freeper Dittos!!!
No, we just don’t believe the Roman heresy about the trinity.
People are tired of baptists. You know, carter, clinton and now huck.
OH NO, NOT WALTER MARTIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!
EVERYONE KNOWS HE IS THE BE ALL AND END ALL OF DEFINING WORDS IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE!!!!
/saracasm off
Oh, come on, folks. You’re not Freepers, conservatives and intelligent for nothing. It was a question to conjure up (choose your word(s) here — sorry I’m not good with words). In addition, it’s like Mr. Huckabee saying, “Vote for me, I’m the true/better Christian/religious person.” And in my heart and your hearts, I think you realize this.
Glenn Beck is Mormon. Could that have anything to do with his statement?
The LDS church beliefs are not relevant.
How Mitt handles questions is relevant. Mitt has a habit of “tailoring” responses to put it nicely.
Huck’s church practices full immersion baptism solely. If someone were to ask him about that, I would hope he would answer truthfully. If he doesn’t, it’s a matter of concern.
Glenn Beck would have said the exact same thing if he were still a Catholic like me.
What? You can't "turn down" the media volume on a Huckabee so that you don't have to read his words & listen to him & watch him? Somebody's holding you hostage to visit this Huckabee thread & other media venues? Shall we call FREEPER 911?
(I sure hope no one's forcing you to vote for anyone either...And I know the difference between deciding you're not going to vote for a certain POTUS candidate & trying to influence others on inconsistent grounds that are not raised as similar standards in other contexts).
THEN, goes on to say Dont Mormons, he asked in an innocent voice, believe that Jesus and the devil are brothers?
He has foot in mouth disease.

Unfortunately, simply having pressure way down deep doesn't translate into "DNA formed naturalistically". It doesn't even begin to deal with the other problems inherent in the abiogenetic theory.
You did know the ocean has MILLIONS of different viruses ~ just filled to the brim with them. Where are those genes coming from?
Any number of sources, most of them outside the ocean.
And what does the Huck think about that?
Probably not much if he can help it.
The whole contention from my point of view is not whether those outside one faith think that the beliefs of the other faith are weird, but is instead about what evangelical Christians consider to be deception on the part of Mormons to “own” all of their beliefs. We can all debate back and forth about which set of beliefs is correct, but the issue will not be resolved until evangelicals are satisfied that Mormons have owned their beliefs.
“Oh, how do you plead?”
If he was asking a NYT reporter a question about the nuances of Mormon belief, he was obtuse. If he was getting a less-than-subtle dig about Mormon beliefs into an article he knew would be widely read, he was disgraceful. Your choice.
“The content of your post isn’t what we’re objecting to as much as “why” you’ve said it...”
Because his motives are obvious to an unbiased observer, of which I am one, being a supporter of neither Huckabee nor Romney.
Huckabee knew full well the reporter had nothing to teach him about Mormonism, but he just couldn’t resist getting the insult in. Huckabee needs to learn that he is running for President of the United States, not President of the Evangelicals. He can adhere to his beliefs without belittling the beliefs of others, especially since, as President, part of his job would be to see that everyone’s rights were protected, and that would includes the rights of religious minorities with whose doctrine he disagrees.
“Nice to see you extend that wonderful open, pluralistic, religious tolerance toward Huckabee’s one question!”
I am criticising his actions, not his beliefs.
“Theres another thread on this. What Huck said seems to be true according to the Mormon website”
It would be interesting to know the actual truth on what Mormans believe on this, there have been links posted to some of their material indicating this is/or was a belief.
But this stuff doesn’t belong in a presidential election, it belongs in a theological discussion.
Huckabee needs to “no comment” everytime this is brought up.
The difference is that Lucifer was a created being. Christ is not.
