TOLEDO, Ohio — A Republican state lawmaker won a special congressional election Tuesday, hanging onto to a conservative district despite a strong push by Democrats.

Union-backed groups and Democrats were hoping to steal the seat from the GOP and make a big statement going into the 2008 election in Ohio, which is expected to again have a significant role in determining the next president.

Republican Bob Latta defeated Robin Weirauch to complete the term of U.S. Rep. Paul Gillmor who died in September from a fall at his Washington apartment.

Latta, the son of a former Ohio congressman, had 55 percent of the vote and Weirauch had 45 percent with 42 percent of the vote counted.

The 5th District in northwest Ohio is conservative and traditionally Republican. No Democrat has won the seat since the 1930s.

But Latta faced a stronger challenge than expected after winning a close primary race in

” That it was even this close is troubling. That it was this close, with so much RNC help, is doubly troubling.”

i actually dont find it as troubling as you. it was a 12% victory - not close in a special election this is not close.
there was no incumbent and the Dem running had run for the seat twice before. she had name recognition as the challenger, support from the national DCCC and unions, and she had the organization already in place from her prior runs. The winner had to overcome all of this right after winning a rather bitter primary battle. Sorry but this seat staying in our column is a solid win despite the money spent.

This may be true but it’s only because Republicans are pitifully inept at telling the public the truth. It shouldn’t be that hard to convince the required numbers. These are simple issues.

It’s interesting that the primitive organisms over at the Kos Klux Klan were all excited about this race 2 days ago, and now they have strangely gone silent. Hmmmmm.

I think you are right. The Democrat wave wasn’t as much one in favor of them. Very few voters vote for the hope of raising taxes and extreme liberal policies. Republicans have the Democrats on record trying to raise taxes and the American people have seen that the Democrats are even worse at getting things done than the Republicans they threw out. Plus Iraq has been beat like a dead horse and now that Iraq is stabilizing the call to bring the troops home seems a hollow idea. The Democrats tide themselves to a train that has been turned around.

If I were Republicans I’d run against the Democrats as the party of retreat and the party of high taxes out of touch with the common man and his values. Will it happen? Republicans have a very bad history of repeatedly failing to label Democrats effectively. This is one reason polls on many issues favor Democrats. It is because the Democrats are always talking about how much they care about this and that and making big statements. This needs to be changed if the political landscape is going to be changed permanently in favor of the GOP and conservatives.

The GOP needs to keep hitting this issue-hard-in every district that's part of the Rust belt, the Northeast, and in places like North Carolina, which is besieged by illegals.

Nikki Tsongas and her Nepotism Express just barely escaped the wrath of voters in deep-blue Massachusetts, who should have elected a man who knows what damage porous borders can do.

I don't think they'll be so lucky in future elections.

Republican’s made a clean sweep in the local elections in Chester County, PA.

Urban flight has brought the Dems out of the city into exurbia, so it isn’t a given.

Well, Duncan Hunter has already said he’d pardon them. Has Rudy, Mitt, John or Fred said the same thing?
