The Politico) GOP state Del. Rob Wittman is heading to a landslide victory over Iraq war veteran Phil Forgit (D) in today's Virginia special election to succeed the late Rep. Jo Ann Davis (R-Va).
With 67 percent of precincts reporting, Wittman has won 63 percent of the vote, while Forgit has only tallied 35 percent. Most of the outstanding vote is from Republican-heavy parts of the district, making it all-but-impossible for Forgit to close the gap.
Neither party’s congressional campaign committee spent much money in the district, but the NRCC had spent money to produce a campaign ad, which they never aired. Instead, all the attention has been in northwest Ohio, where a much-closer special election also took place today.
The district has been reliably Republican, giving President Bush 60 percent of the vote in 2004. But even conservative parts of the Old Dominion have trended in a Democratic direction recently, and Gov. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) and former governor Mark Warner campaigned alongside Forgit over the last week.
Meanwhile, House Minority Leader John Boehner said that, if Wittman was elected, he would work to secure him a spot on the coveted House Armed Services Committee.
You forgot to add “Resistance Is Futile!” I hope this election is a sign of what will happen in 2008.
Putnam, Huron, Henry, and Defiance counties are still out, and they seem like they’re further out from the Toledo area, while it looks like the Toledo-area precincts are in. So it looks like we have more Republican areas out and no reseviors of Democratic strength. We have nothing to worry about here.

TOLEDO (AP) — Republican state representative Bob Latta has been elected to fill a vacant congressional seat in northwest Ohio.
The Associated Press called the race for Latta just before 9 p.m. With 65 percent of precincts reporting, Latta had 56 percent of the vote, compared to 44 percent for Democratic candidate Robin Weirauch.
Latta will replace the late Paul Gillmor, who died in September from a fall at his Washington apartment. Latta’s father, Delbert, held the conservative and traditionally Republican 5th district seat from 1959 until 1989.
The 51-year-old Latta won the GOP nomination November 6th following a bruising primary campaign with state Senator Steve Buehrer.

My congressman, Patrick Murphy, is another "Iraqi war veteran" the rats found when they started kicking over rocks looking for somebody to run against Mike Fitzpatrick. Turned out the kid was a friggin military lawyer. The kid probably spent his time sniffing around for "war crimes" he could charge real soldiers with. He ended up winning thanks to a sliver of Philadelphia that was gerrymandered into the district (formerly Jim Greenwood's district). Murphy lost everywhere else.
Of course, it didn't help that Mike had way too much "moderate" in him to energize conservatives to get out and vote. Anyway, there will hopefully be a rematch next year and we can get rid of Murphy.
It looks like Defiance, Putnam, Huron and Henry Counties still out. Numbers haven’t moved in a while. Looks like Defiance has about 40,000 give or take a few thousand. Putnam’s around 35K, 60K, Henry 39K
Looks like there might still be 25-30,000 votes still out.
While I was playing with my math in the post above, Henry came in with about a 57/42 % split for the Republican.
Almost 80% of precincts reporting and the lead has increased slightly. Looks like this one’s in the bag.
I'm an OEF veteran but I'll never vote for a DemocRAT, regardless of his military service. When it comes to politics, DemocRATS are the enemy and all your atta boys are canceled by that one "Aw crap" of being a RAT.
Yes, based on my projection of the votes remaining out there, the democrat would have to carry the 3 remaining counties by about 3 to 1 to make it close.
The Dems really stepped in it by putting money in this race. Now they look ridiculous. Latta’s 56% is pretty close to Gillmor’s 57% from his last race, so the Dems made no headway here.

THe Washington post had one of those blurbs, pointing to a 2-point poll, Latham being successfully tied to Taft, republicans being like radioactive waste, etc..
Looks like they were off a bit.
The local blogs were predicting Forgit would have an upset victory, but I don’t fault them, it’s their job to try to convince their voters to show up at the polls. They put a lot of effort into it, and the republicans had a pretty hard-fought convention but no real rancor.
Unfortunately, now we have to fight another special election in Virginia to fill Wittman’s house of Delegates seat, and that will be a harder fight.
So I still wish we had picked Paul Jost to run for the congressional seat — he would have won just as easily, is a strong fiscal conservative, and we wouldn’t have to fight another race now.
