Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee, an ordained Southern Baptist minister, asks in an upcoming article, "Don't Mormons believe that Jesus and the devil are brothers?"
The article, to be published in Sunday's New York Times Magazine, says Huckabee asked the question after saying he believes Mormonism is a religion but doesn't know much about it. His rival Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, is a member of the Mormon church, which is known officially as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The authoritative Encyclopedia of Mormonism, published in 1992, does not refer to Jesus and Satan as brothers. It speaks of Jesus as the son of God and of Satan as a fallen angel, which is a Biblical account.
A spokeswoman for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said Huckabee's question is usually raised by those who wish to smear the Mormon faith rather than clarify doctrine.
"We believe, as other Christians believe and as Paul wrote, that God is the father of all," said the spokeswoman, Kim Farah. "That means that all beings were created by God and are his spirit children. Christ, on the other hand, was the only begotten in the flesh and we worship him as the son of God and the savior of mankind. Satan is the exact opposite of who Christ is and what he stands for."
Romney did not respond to a request for comment.
Earlier this month in Iowa, Huckabee wouldn't say whether he thought Mormonism rival Romney's religion was a cult.
"I'm just not going to go off into evaluating other people's doctrines and faiths. I think that is absolutely not a role for a president," the former Arkansas governor said.

He knows good and well that Romney's failure to rise in the polls, and his success in those same polls is because Mitt couldn't close the deal with the evangelicals. Rather than seeing Romney's past support of abortion as being the problem, he's concluded that it's the Mormon thing.
Now that he feels he's got the ball rolling, he's trying to put some additional spin on it for anybody who hasn't heard yet that Mitt's LDS, and if they don't know about it, what he thinks it means.
He's running for Preacher-in-Chief, and that's what none of us want. At least I'm dead sure that a sizable majority of Americans don't want that. Hillary is going to pull out every Baptist minister stereotype she can during the general election campaign if Huckster becomes our nominee.
I heard a discussion of Mormonism last evening on EWTN between Raymond Arroyo and a prominent Catholic theologian. The theologian said Mormonism in the last thirty years has been moving closer and closer to mainstream Christianity in the U.S. He also said the anti-abortion movement had no better friend than the Mormon Church. He also liked Mitt’s speech on religion in the public square—he called it unique in political history, a strong statement against the increasing secularism that is being foisted on us by the courts and determined atheists.
All in all, the discussion was extremely positive and admiring of Romney and his speech. Let the Huckabees of the world be bigots. I want nothing to do with him.
Explained here. Hope this helps.
LOL. Sorry, I can’t help but laugh at the thought of anyone crying over the Carter win.
It must have sucked. Thankfully I wasn’t living here in this country then so I have no memories of those days.
Weak.
Shouldn’t you be at a Zealots meeting or something?
You got nothing.
Try quoting something authoritative.
And while you’re at it, try to actually quote something rather than misquoting.
I agree that Rominey is obnoxious but not sure about the bigot tag.
This is going to get ugly. Since Huckabee’s taking this route I’m guessing his internals show that his surge has stopped, and probably started receding in the face of increased scrutiny of his record. Given that he got popular based on being personable and sunshiny, he’s running a huge risk departing from what brought him to the dance. We could see a repeat of Iowa 2004, when Gephardt and Dean hammered each other only to kick themselves out of the lead in favor of Kerry.
Those 90% republicans can be counted on to turn out for Harry Reid, and the Udall clan, can't they?
“Its wall-to-wall Huckabee love on all the major networks”
Watching CNN today, they were making big attention and cheering Huckster’s bus tour of Iowa.
The Bee is going to sting himself in the butt!
Im a Methodist and a Trinitarian. I thought everyone was.
PRECISELY.
I personally don’t care what they believe in unless Jesus is going to come down and build a border fence, kick the sh-t out of the Islamofascists who want to kill us, and get government spending under control. Until then, I want to know where the men stand on this.
From wikipedia “Most divisions of Christianity are Trinitarian, and regard belief in the Trinity as a test of Christian orthodoxy.” As it turns out the only familiar branches of Christianity which do not accept the trinity are Mormons and Unitarians, which is the main reason why many don’t accept them as Christian. In ancient times the Arian and Monophysite heresies didn’t accept the Trinity, which is why Islam was accepted by many formerly Monophysite and Arian Christians.
Since you are the expert, what is the difference between the Evangelical view of the Trinity and the Roman Catholic view of the Trinity?
That’s MY definition of a Christian.
Well, I don't seem to recall any LDS condemnation of Mitt Romney's previous stand on abortion, either from members of the church hierarchy or from any prominent members. Also, Sen. Orrin Hatch has been very supportive of embryonic stem cell taxpayer-financed research.
Yes I know that. That was the point. THat’s why I stated that the trinity concept makes no sense to me either. I’ve given up on trying to figure out exactly what the truth is. I’ve decided that I’ll learn the truth when I leave this world and this imperfect body with it’s imperfect mind that is incapable of grasping the true nature of god no matter how hard I try.
That is why I say to all the fools that argue over this point(the trinity) that I don’t give a dam. You will never convince me that you are so perfect to understand god completely enough to know beyond a doubt ANYTHING about god.
So stick that in your pipe and smoke it.
The whole GOP nomination contest is FUBAR.
It would be funny if we were still two years out.
I doubt anyone accepts islam unless conquered by islamic peoples.
