Minuteman Project Founder Endorses Mike Huckabee

Noting that he might not agree 100 percent on immigration with Huckabee, the firebrand illegal immigration opponent said Huckabee's recently released immigration plan won him over.

"The governor has a plan and I appreciate his plan. That's why I'm supporting him. He's one of the few who's actually brought forth a plan and gone public with it. It shows to me that he's willing to engage in the tough love necessary to fix this problem," Gilchrist said.

Gilchrist, whose organization is separate from the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps, has drawn protests in appearances at college campuses in recent months for his views on strict illegal immigration laws. Unlike the MCDC, whose primary role is to park volunteers along the U.S.-Mexico border to report jumpers to Border Patrol agents, the Minuteman Project calls attention to enforcement of state and federal laws relating to immigration.

Huckabee last week announced a get-tough immigration plan, proposing to construct a border fence with surveillance cameras by July 1, 2010, calling for an increase to the number of Border Patrol agents and imposing steep penalties on employers who hire illegal immigrants.

“Perhaps Gilchrist is simply an idiot.”

Huck’s been fooling more than him along the way, that’s for sure.

Huckabee is slicker than a greased eel.

He’s a very effective communicator and comes across as the most authentic candidate — not to us, but to people who don’t sit around burning up political chat websites .

I think you're exactly right here and this is largely responsible for his recent surge in popularity.

I'm 100% for Hunter right now and would be happy with Thompson but I've been hearing all about how great they think Huckabee is from people who are nowhere near as intersted as I am in day-to-day political news.

My aunt belongs to a church where they are basically socially conservative socialists and they all love the Huckster there.

I was asked who I was supported by someone generally conservative and so I told him supported Hunter. His response was along the lines of "Hunter would be great but there's no way he's going anywhere." (I said - "If he had a dollar and a vote from everyone who said that.....") I asked who he supported and he said Huckabee because "he's the only one who when he speaks it doesn't seem like he's lying to me."

It's strange because even though I read all of the negative things about him here and I am very wary of his brand of "compassionate conservatism" (shudder) I too am taken in when I hear him speak and can almost believe he's genuine.

“This guy is basically GWB without the blue blood and marble mouth right down to the faith-based decision making.”

I know GWB, GWB is a friend of mine and GWB never:
- foisted huge tax increases as Governor
- freed killers with clemency and parole
- said we had to close Gitmo and stop waterboarding
- was a clueless dolt like Huckabee is on foreign policy (eg NIE report)
- got union endorsements
- bashed big business and called Club for Growth “club for greed” like a populist

Huck is far worse choice than GWB.

“still preferrable to Shrillary or Oprahbama. “
Any Republican is. Alas, Huckabee is #8 out of the 8 candidates in terms of overall conservative bona fides.

Huck won get the nomination. While the liberal media is pushing him up, there is enough time for thinking people to see the damage the Huckester can do.

A hick from a town with the enter and leaving sign on the same post and from a state that has less of a population than the county I live in with no backgoung in foreign, national security or military does not belong as Comander in Chief especially when we are at war and will be for a long time to come.

But Mitt is still better than Huck. Why not him?

I don't know. I really haven't paid a lot of attention to Mitt's stance on illegal immigration, and I don't really trust him to present his stance honestly and stick by what he says.

Not that I trust Rudy or Huck significantly more.

Apparently Gilchrist liked the plan that Huck presented. I guess if you can't trust any of the three you think you have to choose between, you might as well pick the one that at least says what you want to hear, and hope that he does what he thinks voters want him to do after he gets elected.

After all, amnesty for illegal immigrants isn't popular with the general public so there might be some reason to hope that he will follow through with a plan to secure our borders and enforce our immigration laws better. I can't say I have much confidence in that, but our current choices (leaders in the polls) are looking awfully bleak.

Egads! The least honest man who does the best impression of integrity on the easily impressionable... Politics is about sincerity, and if you can fake that you’ve got ‘em, I guess. Sadly, it’s exactly this kind of thing that helped Clinton.

Huckabee has changed his positions significantly, has a tax-and-spend record yet makes false claims about being ‘forced’ to raise taxes when he wasn’t. He defends his soft-on-crime pardon record by attacking the messengers.
And his flip-flops on immigration and taxes and other matters are out there, but not picked up because he’s “genuine”.

POWERS: “And another issue that’s come up is that you had previously been lobbying President Bush to lift the embargo on Cuba. And then in a recent debate said the opposite. What changed?”

HUCKABEE: “What changed was I’m running for president.”

Of the 3, Mitt Romney is by FAR the most genuine, has the highest integrity, is the most accomplished, is the most trustworthy, and is the most conservative.

Just because Huck talks a good talk doesn’t make this tax-and-spender a real conservative. Huckabee’s record is one of a tax-and-spend liberal.

“One of the governor’s biggest weaknesses is his record in Arkansas. While Huckabee did cut taxes during the early years of his tenure, the fact remains that he had a net tax increase under his watch, and the increase in Government size is terrifying. 21 tax increases went into effect, increasing tax revenue by almost $890 million under Governor Huckabee. These increases include the income tax, the sales tax, a cigarette tax, and a gas tax. Not only did he raise taxes, spending “more than doubled under Huckabee. “During Huckabee’s 10 years as governor, state spending more than doubled, from $6.6 billion to $16.1 billion in the fiscal year ending June 30, 2006.” There was an increase in state spending of over 65% during his tenure, and the size of the government increased by 20%. According to the Americans for Tax Reform, the states general obligation debt went up by “almost one billion dollars.” Arkansas state tax burden was at 9.8% when Bill Clinton left office in 1992. Under Huckabee, it was at 11.1%, reaching the rank of one of the top fifteen state tax burdens.”

“Apparently Gilchrist liked the plan that Huck presented. “

Mitt Romney’s entire campaign platform and plan is 100% Ronald Reagan - family values, strong military, fiscal conservativism. If we went by the best plans and the best campaign, Mitt should be a shoo-in.

Mitt gets dinged because he ran squishy on a few social issues to get elected in Massachusetts. Yet, as Governor, Mitt Romney was a more conservative Governor in Massachusetts than Mike Huckabee was in Arkansas, especially on fiscal issues. Mitt was *consistently* against in-state tuition for illegal aliens , while Mike Huckabee has flip-flopped and shaded his position, for it in Arkansas and now pretending its would be different at Federal level (it is not).

True, and Huckster will never be President (ie unelectable if he is our nominee) because of it.

And while I completely agree, it’s a dang shame we didn’t properly use this issue in 1992 against Clinton when it was equally true!

Ohio, for one.

But Mitt is still better than Huck.

Why Because he has flip-flopped on more issues? Mitt wit's record is almost entirely liberal. He can't even buy off enough voters to beat Huckabee in Iowa so no one is buying his attempt to pass himself off as conservative.

Willard is a phony.

Bush was a mistake foisted upon us by the elites and media 9 years ago.

The media was doing its best to push McCain on the Republican party nine years ago.

I have no idea what would possess Gilchrist to do this.

$$$$$$$$$$$$ and attention. The Minutemen's fundraising is falling apart, and there are other questions about the group. Dukakabee is probably the only candidate who would return his calls.

What load of crap. Romney's record is almost completely liberal in Massachussets. He is likely flip-flopped on more issues than Giuliani.

Opposing Huckabee is one thing. Trying to pass of the Mitt wit as the superior RINO is laughable.
