Two researchers here spent months scouring through old expedition logs and reports, and reviewing 70-year-old maps and photos before making a surprising discovery. They found that the effects of the current warming and melting of Greenland 's glaciers that has alarmed the world's climate scientists occurred in the decades following an abrupt warming in the 1920s.
Their evidence reinforces the belief that glaciers and other bodies of ice are exquisitely hyper-sensitive to climate change and bolsters the concern that rising temperatures will speed the demise of that island's ice fields, hastening sea level rise.
The work, reported at this week's annual meeting of the American Geophysical Union in San Francisco , may help to discount critics' notion that the melting of Greenland 's glaciers is merely an isolated, regional event.
They recently recognized from using weather station records from the past century that temperatures in Greenland had warmed in the 1920s at rates equivalent to the recent past. But they hadn't confirmed that the island's glaciers responded to that earlier warming, until now.
"What's novel about this is that we found a wealth of information from low-tech sources that has been overlooked by most researchers," explained Jason Box, an associate professor of geography at Ohio State University and a researcher with the Byrd Polar Research Center. Many researchers, he says, rely heavily on information from satellites and other modern sources.
Undergraduate student Adam Herrington, co-author on this paper and a student in the School of Earth Sciences, spent weeks in the university's libraries and archives, scouring the faded, dusty books that contained the logs of early scientific expeditions, looking primarily for photos and maps of several of Greenland 's key glaciers.

....And that leads to my second observation about how it seems that the scientific community particularly those dealing with
planetary dynamics/sciences have been so incredibly quick to jump the gun in what I see has not been based on a politically-
neutral wholly scientific perspective but much more so as time goes on, on one that is based on liberal,left-wing agenda,
one that is a similar strain of moon at syndrome aotherwise known as environmental wascko-ism, with full credit to
Rush Limbaugh.
I say this because despite what seems a startling similarity of the weather patterns between what we are experiencing today
and that of the 1920's, the writers of this article just couldn't themselves to say that maybe it's not global warming after all, based on this discovery.
Now, no one expects them to make an absolute scientific conclusion that it's not global warming after all. But taking into consideration the fears inherent and implicit in global warming, it wouldn't violate any scientific principle to say, hey folks, it might not be global warming
after all. But you notice they specifically refuse to say anything that might be placate our fears. Do you know why??? Because it may not be a matter of science but much more Machiavellian, politics, specifically, environmental-wacko-ism. Wow! Rush has been saying it for years and this article's refusal to make the slightest accommodation based on this 1920's pattern, says so much more by having not said anything.

I find it just amazing that ‘scientists’ can be so blind to the obvious conclusion that climate change is cyclical and ‘natural’ - choosing, instead, to delude themselves into some heroic ‘saving the world’ fantasy...
Egged on, of course, by a whole constellation of self-serving ignoramuses in government, media, and business...

Just letting you know that there are many comments on the same basic story.
A few years ago a local tire dealer had a billboard advertising “Low Carb Tires”. It was a great joke poking fun at most people’s new found enlightenment. Of course most people didn’t get it.

I'm not much of a researcher, and my low tech computer doesn't allow much for saving things, so I have to rely on my memory (good luck wit' dat ), however ... I seem to recall when I first started hearing about all this gorebull warming, that before "experts" and computer models were used to "prove" gorebull warming ... we were given accounts and records from weather stations and the like to (at first) indicate gorebull warming might be happening ... and only later were the records ignored and "experts" and computer models used to now "verify" that gorebull warming was indeed a fact.
IOW ... there were documented fluctuations in weather/climate that were not devastations, but the parts that proved fluctuations was picked up and the lack of devastatuion was ignored, and an addendum of, "Devastation is real and coming soon to a neighborhood like yours" became the new physics.

And while we can probably say that weather is somewhat cyclical, the universe is so magnificent in size and scope, that one primary factor (Co2)is insufficient for use in any prediction.
One teensie weensie problem, CO2 concentration follows temperature, not the other way around, thus, CO2 is not a predictor of temperature trends at all. See the results of all seven major ice core expeditions for the data. There is also significant data taken from geologic core samples, dating back over 600 million years, that appear to show the same phenomenon.
What amazes me is the amount of contrary information that the "warmers" ignore. Things like most of the glaciers in the world are growing, not melting. The antarctic ice cap has grown by 2 million square kilometers in recent years, etc. Most of these idiots are completely ignoring the historical data. Therefore, in the course of human endevors when the facts don't add up, follow the money. In this case, hundreds of billions of dollars of grant money, carbon credits and your tax dollars being flushed down the 3rd world toilet.....courtesy of the UN and the Profit Owl Gore...
Why is it called “Greenland”?
I actually think that that is about to start now in this ‘Global Warming’ debate as former ‘true believers’ start to recant from varying degrees of hysteria. The problem today is that all of the normal news channels are still populated by ‘true believers’ and thus these skeptics are not really noticed.
I think what RoadTest is alluding to (and many Globull Warming Idiots want to conveniently forget) is that “GREENLAND” was indeed green when the Vikings settled the place around 900 AD, and had a thriving farming community there during a period when the global temperatures were much warmer than they are at present.
Of course - around 1300 AD, the warming trend had reversed to the point that the settlement was abandoned ...and the worst of this cooling cycle (called a mini-Ice Age) occurred around 1600 AD.
Now ...if it was up to me, I would rather have global temperatures around what they were in 900 AD than in 1600 AD!! But I ask the Globull Warming Idiots what they feel is the optimum temperature for Mommy Earth (Gaia) - and what man can do to prevent the periodic swings that have occurred over the past millions of years.
