ROCKVILLE, Md. -- The agency that oversees training and hiring standards for police departments in Maryland is looking at a proposal that would let noncitizens with green cards become police officers.

The proposal is being championed by Montgomery County Police Chief Thomas Manger. He said it doesn't make sense that legal immigrants can join the U.S. military but can't become law enforcement officers.

The Maryland Police Training Commission could vote on the issue next month.

Critics said it would be difficult to check the backgrounds of noncitizens applying to be officers, and they said the proposal could allow terrorists to infiltrate police agencies.

The left really wants to eliminate the idea of national identity. They would like it if anyone were able to walk into the USA and immediately vote, get welfare, get free health care (that’s what “Universal Health Care” is really about).

That would effectively eliminate White Christians of European background. That would suit the left just fine.

So, what's your point? Should we be restricting the rights of naturalized citizens?

Of course, we should be vigilant in conducting rigorous background checks of police officers and others in positions of public trust, but to take the example of a couple of naturalized citizens who slipped through the cracks and draw conclusions about all naturalized citizens/permanent residents is, i think, unreasonable.

I agree, but what does that have to do with this? This story is talking about legal permanent residents. Not people who "walked into the USA" and immediately voted/got welfare/etc. We're talking about people who complied with all of the proper immigration laws and procedures, received legal permanent resident status (just a step away from citizenship) and now want to serve their new communities as police officers.

Most “LEGAL” immigrants like myself eventually become US citizens. I served in US Customs when I became a citizen. I think we need to distinguish between “legal” and “illegal” immigrants.

This is the meaning you used in your post: 3. based on personal observation, case study reports, or random investigations rather than systematic scientific evaluation: anecdotal evidence.

As to the rest, no, not at all. Right now, non-citizens with green cards can be members of the military, but are restricted as to the types of positions they can actually perform. They are not elegible for security clearances.

I have no problem with legal immigration and, like I’ve said before in previous posts, have friends from all over the world who came to this country legally.

The discussion here is whether local police jurisdictions should employ non-citizens as police officers. Personally, I think it’s a bad idea for a whole host of reasons.

I am having a hard time understanding your point. What are your specific objections to LPRs serving in the police department?
