Bottom line: Look, if there was no 100% "apostasy" of the Christian faith & the Christian church (Protestant/Catholic/Orthodox) as claimed by Joseph Smith, then no "restoration" needed.
So the translation of this is "We're locked into accusing the Christians of being "apostates" (like the Muslims accusing the Christians of being "infidels").
A "restored Christianity" (what LDS call themselves) is only necessary if there was a 100% "failed Christianity."

False Prophets and Their Punishment
But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive opinions. They will even deny the Master who bought them—bringing swift destruction on themselves. 2Even so, many will follow their licentious ways, and because of these teachers* the way of truth will be maligned. 3And in their greed they will exploit you with deceptive words.
