ABOUT 30,000 SEE OBAMA-OPRAH IN SC
MSNBC ^ | 12/9/07 | Chuck Todd

COLUMBIA, SC -- Oprah Winfrey took the stage at William Bryce Football Stadium to deafening cheers. Over 29,000 people filled the risers, some having driven from as far as Savannah, GA, to see her appear with Barack Obama.

At what was the third campaign stop Oprah has made with Obama this weekend, she praised him as an "evolved leader," pinning her desire to support Obama on his ability to inspire people.

"For the first time, I'm stepping out of my pew because I've been inspired. I've been inspired to believe that a new vision is possible for America. Dr King dreamed the dream. But we don't have to just dream the dream anymore. We get to vote that dream into reality," she told the crowd.

Oprah's speech were largely similar to the remarks she delivered in Iowa, but her words appeared more compelling against the background of a football stadium filled with people. And rather than delivering a long preamble on why she didn't think she could easily sell her fans on a political candidate she simply joked, "I got some sense, I know the difference between a book club and this seminal moment in our history."

Oprah's message was one of personal empowerment, similar to the stories she tells on her show everyday, telling the crowd that asking Obama to wait to run was the same as someone telling someone that they should wait to try and better their lives. It played well with the crowd here who shouted and applauded as she spoke.

Though the campaign came no where near filling the 80,000 seat auditorium, the atmosphere was infectious with Arrested Development and local bands playing, getting the crowd to sing and dance along.

I’d be interested to see how the media photographs it - will it be shown as a packed stadium or a sparce stadium?

They were referring to the stadium’s capacity...and they were very clear to point out that nowhere near that number was expected.

Why is it okay for Fox and CNN to broadcast an Obama campaign event? It wouldn’t be okay for them to broadcast a Thompson event, would it?
And why is it okay for Obama to say that his distant kinship to Dick Cheney is embarrassing? Could Dick Cheney say that about Obama? Republicans can’t even say “macaca” without penalty.

What is that? It doesn't even really make sense. She has been inspired to believe that a new vision is possible for America. Well, anybody can have a vision. Anyone can dream a dream. Of course she knows that, which is why her next sentence takes a logic leap and says "We don't have to just dream the dream anymore. We get to vote that dream into reality." What she wants is to give power to someone who will bring her own dream to reality. Ooooookaaay. What's the dream? You want to turn public policy meetings into a talk show?

With the mention of Dr. King and his dream, I must assume part of this is about race. Ooookaaay again. What makes Obama more able than anyone else and what specifically is she wanting him to do? I get the overwhelming impression that her excitement is all about his black face. Race, in other words. That same reason in a person of any other color would be called racism. It's also a weird concept to put forth by a black WOMAN who has been hugely successful for a very long time and is filthy rich -- all possible in the old vision America. In fact old vision America have Obama a U.S. Senate seat. So what is the new vision supposed to do?

Interesting that it was....

Oprah’s speech

Oprah’s message

And only a brief reference to Obama's talk: “Obama also had a fine moment, bringing thousands to their feet saying that it was time to “stand up” for change.”

This could backfire horribly -- Oprah could outshine Obama, thus him getting lost in her celebrity, just as Hillary finds happening whenever she has to share a stage with BillyJ.

This is just about the last thing in the world Hillary needs at this point.

Her campaign is bumping along from one stumble/disappointment after another and now the "Oprah Factor" kicks in and there's really nothing, politically correct, she can do about it...unless she turns to her "dark side".

Remember, her dark side goes Vince Foster deep and she won't waste any time deploying her next strike.

I wondered about that too. I thought, if a caucasian had said that...., it would be misconstrued to be worse than 'nappy headed ....'.
