Kidding Ourselves About Immigration
Time ^ | December 6, 2007 | MICHAEL KINSLEY

Posted on 12/09/2007 5:23:00 AM PST by LowCountryJoe

[snip]Another question: Why are you so upset about this particular form of lawbreaking? After all, there are lots of laws, not all of them enforced with vigor. The suspicion naturally arises that the illegality is not what bothers you. What bothers you is the immigration. There is an easy way to test this. Reducing illegal immigration is hard, but increasing legal immigration would be easy. If your view is that legal immigration is good and illegal immigration is bad, how about increasing legal immigration? How about doubling it? Any takers?...

[snip]But let's not kid ourselves that all we care about is obeying the law and all we are asking illegals to do is go home and get in line like everybody else. We know perfectly well that the line is too long, and we are basically telling people to go home and not come back.

Let's not kid ourselves, either, about who we are telling this to. To characterize illegal immigrants as queue-jumping, lawbreaking scum is seriously unjust. The motives of illegal immigrants--which can be summarized as "a better life"--are identical to those of legal immigrants. In fact, they are largely identical to the motives of our own parents, grandparents and great-grandparents when they immigrated. And not just that. Ask yourself, of these three groups--today's legal and illegal immigrants and the immigrants of generations ago--which one has proven most dramatically its appreciation of our country? Which one has shown the most gumption, the most willingness to risk all to get to the U.S. and the most willingness to work hard once here? Well, everyone's story is unique. But who loves the U.S. most? On average, probably, the winners of this American-values contest would be the illegals, doing our dirty work under constant fear of eviction,...

It’s not only the illegality per se that we should object to, it’s the resultant lack of an immigration program and its rules that hurt the country. Do we accept all who strive to come here without regard to their education level? Do we accept all without regard to whether they have criminal records? Do we accept all without regard to whether they have serious, communicable disease? And, do we accept all regardless of their intent, even if they desire this country’s downfall?

Not only is illegal immigration good for America, illegal immigration will make America strong. Illegals come here only to better themselves. No illegals would dare consider breaking any of America’s laws.

The illegals do not take advantage of the American taxpayers. The illegals do not dwell in criminal activity. It is the exact opposite with the illegals. America should ban legal immigration. There is where the real problems lay. None should be allow to come to this nation, unless those who do come are coming here illegally. The new catch phrase is, If it is legal, America does not desire it.

Yes, legal immigration is the problem. LaRaza, CAIR, the ACLU all back illegal immigration. With organizations such as these backing illegal immigration, I would hope Congress will come on-board and demand America remove every legal from this nation. By Congressional Action, America can do the right thing and remove the LEGALS from our midst, thus our nation can be made strong again.

Contact your Representatives and Senators and demand all LEGALS be removed. It’s the right thing to do. LaRaza, CAIR, the ACLU and many other organizations will support your efforts, and our Congressional Representatives will fully know that America has seen the light of the oncoming, speeding Freight Train and is willing to place American on the tracks, for America’s demise. It will be a wonderful day. Each one participating will feel good about themselves, that they too, brought fourth the strength illegal immigration brings.

Based on the title and the contents of the article, I’d have to agree. Mr. Kinsley is kidding himself.

With all respect, Colonel, I do not think that your post addresses the seeming inconsistency in the conservative ranks. Unless of course your stance is that immigration, in general, is harming us and it should all be stopped – if this is indeed your view. This would be an interesting take from a Marine Field-Grade Officer, who had to have known that he had many fine young enlisted Marines under his charge that were green card carrying immigrants or children thereof.

Please speak to viable solutions, then, Colonel. It is much more productive.

I’m with Rudder on this. Why did we stop doing things the way we did it at Ellis Island?

Why flame you, unless you agree with the article, which you have not stated.

Right off the bat, the dumb ass who wrote this states: “...Why are you so upset about this particular form of lawbreaking? After all, there are lots of laws, not all of them enforced with vigor. The suspicion naturally arises that the illegality is not what bothers you. What bothers you is the immigration...”

Yes, there are lots of laws not enforced with vigor, but the nature of those un-enforced laws does not often have a direct and immediate impact on our lives.

Additionally, the people breaking those laws do not wish to change the lives of others, they simply wish to do something they feel they should be able to do lawfully (assuming those laws un-enforced “with vigor” are things such as jay-walking and smoking marijuana)

People who enter our country without the express permission to do so are doing so in direct violation of the laws of another country, indicating they have no respect for the rule of law. They wish to change our culture to theirs, they make no secret of that. They are a drain on the resources of our support systems, just ask any emergency room in a state with high illegal immigration.

This article is another statement of the slander that conservatives are against immigration. THEY ARE NOT. THEY ARE AGAINST ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION, AND IMMIGRATION IN THE FORM OF THAT FORMED AND IMPLEMENTED BY TED KENNEDY AND OTHER LIBERALS THAT REJECTS IMMIGRANTS WHO CAN HELP OUR COUNTRY AND OVERWHELMINGLY ACCEPTS IMMIGRANTS WHO HAVE NOTHING TO CONTRIBUTE.

Absolutely, with emphasis upon people friendly to America and with compatible values.

From my pitchfork to you....

We know perfectly well that the line is too long, and we are basically telling people to go home and not come back.

Yes I am because what the author fails to recognize is that with illegal immigration or blanket amnesty you cannot control the quality of immigrants we let in.

You can't just double immigration mamby-pamby. It's a trick question and you've fallen for it.

It's simple really, obey the laws on the books. Set higher standards for admission and get rid of welfare. Employment in low income jobs will work itself out.

No, we should not. There should be background checks and medical screenings done at the immigrant's expense.

Do we accept all who strive to come here without regard to their education level?

Emphatically, yes! A process that makes an immigrant pay the costs of the processes to admissions, would cause the net quality of entrants to increase, especially because of what would be being checked for in the process. And, because either they're getting the money on their own -- which is generally indicative of quality -- or someone stateside is willing to front them the money, also an indicator of quality. Also, after just the third generation, even the descendants of the most uneducated immigrants are properly assimilated and the contributions of these descendants have paid for themselves and there parents who gave birth to them.

I do agree with this article even though I am no fan of its author. I've posted about four or five other times so far on this thread, too. Check into those posts and reply back to me if you would.

LowCountry please answer the following questions:

  1. Do employ low skilled illegal aliens?
  2. Do you currently profit from illegal aliens by renting property etc, to known illegals?
  3. Are you married to a once illegal or dating an illegal now?
  4. Do you have friends or relatives wanting entry into the US and can't do it legally?

a life of being less paranoid

I don't know where you live, but where I live, the illegals don't seem paranoid. They are in your face and everywhere. In fact those poor paranoid immigrants thought it would be nice to tag our entire town with Latin Kings over Thanksgiving.

the point is the left wants to control immigration their way. The left does not want educated self-sufficient immigrants. Such people do not reliably vote Democrat.

I think the biggest problem is that people don’t understand the magnitude of the situation unless they are living in it while others, are making a handsome profit off of Illegals.
I took the bus across town for a year and never heard a word of English. Friday I tried to order Jelly Donuts and walked out empty handed because we couldn’t communicate. I have a trash can, a recycle can, and a can I set aside for burning because of the people picking thru my trash.
Four parked cars were hit on my street, mine included, nobody fessed up to seeing anything, yet my truck was pushed onto the curb 15 feet. I was the only one that made a police report.
50 percent of the accidents here are hit-and run.
You can’t discriminate hiring someone that speaks little English but you can refuse to hire someone that doesn’t speak Spanish.
They drive disposable cars. Their cars have counterfeit tags on them; they drive without a license or insurance.
They are illegally allowed to prepare food at home and sell it in little push carts in front of schools. No vendor license, no health tags.
When they come up here legally, they have to have all their shots. When they come up here illegally, they bring their diseases with them. These are the same people that pick and prepare our food.
When houses were selling fast, I checked on about 10 remodeling jobs in my neighborhood and only one had a permit. They bought the houses for flipping and sold unsafe houses to the unsuspecting.

Illegals assimilate quicker than Legals. The children of illegals speak English. The illegals’ children add quickly to the scores of every school in our nation. The lines at hospitals are shortest in the emergency room, since the illegals came. The illegals add to the tax base and are not a drain to our economy. I can find no basis of wrong done by illegals, instead the illegals’ counterpart the legals paint a complete and direct opposite of what the illegals bring. By all means open the flood gates wider, America cannot survive without the illegals. Criminal activity is of no concern. Without criminal activity America cannot survive. Ban Legal Immigration, and do it now. There is the problem, staring back at America, the Legals. Something has to be done. By all means place America on the train track. Tie America down well, even though America struggles. And when America is gone, all the illegals can celebrate. Yes, the day comes, when America is tied to the train tracks. Please help this author, for America is not the good person lain out on the train track. No, America is the villain.
