Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee, seeking to blunt criticism of his record on immigration, has issued an extensive new plan that calls for illegal aliens to return home voluntarily, pushes employers to check workers' status and would end several legal immigration programs.
It marks a major change in tone from Mr. Huckabee's tenure as governor of Arkansas, when he campaigned for illegal-alien students to be eligible for college scholarships and financial aid and complained about federal raids on work sites that employed illegal workers. In his book earlier this year, he also called for a way for illegal aliens to earn citizenship.
In his new plan, Mr. Huckabee makes no mention of a path to citizenship, instead saying illegal aliens should be given a grace period to leave the country or be barred from returning.
"Those who register and return to their home country will face no penalty if they later apply to immigrate or visit; those who do not return home will be, when caught, barred from future re-entry for a period of 10 years," his plan states.
Mr. Huckabee's plan also specifically calls for reducing the number of illegal aliens through attrition, the strategy favored by most groups that want a crackdown.
The plan, released on his campaign blog at www.mike huckabee.com Thursday, relies almost entirely on a blueprint from a 2005 article written by Mark Krikorian, executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies and one of the top figures in the movement to restrict immigration.
Mr. Krikorian said the Huckabee camp didn't consult him before it "cribbed" the plan, but he said it shows Mr. Huckabee is moving in the direction of most other Republican presidential candidates in embracing enforcement.

How dumb is this? These people snuck in here, but barring them for 10 years—well that sure will teach them! It’s not like they would just sneak back in or something.
That same statement has been ventured by others too and it always makes you laugh. Makes me laugh anyway.
It means:
1) no new illegals
2) resident WASPS outbreed them (He’s not kidding!)
Don’t vote “front runner” Huckabee or any other finger in the wind “front runner”

Interestingly, Huckabee constantly harps on Romney for flip flopping. This is the biggest one I have seen in this election cycle.
