Negotiations fail to settle Kosovo's fate

A diplomatic train wreck eight years in the making appeared all but certain yesterday as U.S., European and Russian mediators admitted failure in a last-ditch attempt to reach a deal in the volatile standoff over the fate of the Serbian province of Kosovo.

"After 120 days of intensive negotiations, the parties were unable to reach an agreement on Kosovo's status," negotiators said in a report to be officially delivered Monday to U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

"Neither side was willing to yield on the basic question of sovereignty," the mediators stated.

In the face of Russian objections, NATO foreign ministers meeting in Brussels pledged to beef up a 16,000-member international peace force in Kosovo, whose Albanian majority appears determined to declare independence from Belgrade before the winter is out.

The province has been in a kind of legal limbo since 1999, when NATO air strikes drove out the forces of then-Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic, accused of atrocities and ethnic cleansing against the Kosovo Albanian community.

Serbia, strongly backed by Moscow, has rejected the idea of Kosovo independence and a lengthy United Nations mediation program has failed to produce a compromise. The United States and leading European Union powers are expected to endorse a unilateral Kosovo declaration of independence, but there are huge questions marks over what happens next.

Are we on the wrong side of this because billy bob wagged the dog and now State is just too immovable to change position and admit the mistake? Kosovo WAS an "illegal war" with doctored intelligence and the CIC lying to Congress and the American people. We helped arm al-quaida and, in effect, became their air force.

"Western diplomats have warned against breaking up Kosovo"

Too bad they don't feel the same way about Serbia.

Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!(Laughing hysterically)

Any intelligent high school student could have seen this train wreck in The Balkans coming. We've seen the same thing happening again and again and again for centuries.

History repeats itself first as tragedy, then as farce...over and over and over again.

And we pay these useless chair moisteners in DC the big bucks, why???

Do you fully understand what the muslims have done in Kosovo since sick willie was playing Stud with Monica?
They have destroyed christian icons in Kosovo that are priceless. The Russians and Serbians are keeping score and when hell breaks out, someone is going to pay for the damage and not with money.

I support the Serbs on Kosovo. We had NO business taking the side of the KLA against Serbia, and anyone with half a brain knew that this was going to come back and bite us on our proverbial asses.

And, in being sympathetic with Serbia and Vladimir The Evil's attempts to thwart the misguided policies of our state department and this President, whom I campaigned for, suddenly, I find myself feeling more like a member of The DU than an independent conservative.

We should have let arms determine “Kosovo’s” fate. No nanny-state told us what we should do with Florida or Texas.

Yes, one of our most terrible mistakes, attacking the Serbs. I sent emails to Cohen imploring him to stop his bombing campaign. We’re on the wrong side again.

Too immovable, or too invested in BJ's failures?
