Girls cost more (due to dowrys etc) therefore are harder on the family and boys continue the family line.

No, it's the son, not the daughter, that will take in and care for the aging parents.

You and I are saying the same thing.

The daughter has less value and costs the family more money. The son has greater value (Passing on the family line, bringing IN money via a dowry AND caring for his parents).

Why anyone bothers with having girls is beyond me ;)
