Animal-rights saboteurs have claimed responsibility for vandalizing the Portland home of a research scientist who uses monkeys to study the causes of premature birth in humans.
In a communique obtained by The Oregonian today, the Animal Liberation Front acknowledged striking two autos owned by Dr. Miles Novy with spray-paint graffiti and paint stripper.
"Novy's reproductive research on primates has resulted in this senseless torture of one of natures most magnificant creatures," ALF saboteurs wrote in a message sent to the Animal Liberation Press Office. "This blatant disregard for the earth, animals and it's resources shall not go unseen by the ever-watching eyes of the ALF."
Novy woke Thursday morning to find the words "sadist" and "ALF" spray painted in red on his vehicles. Paint stripper had left white marks on the cars.
"It's time to fight back," the ALF wrote. "The only reason why people like Miles Novy sleep at night is because we let them."
The ALF, described by the FBI as one of the nation's leading domestic terrorist organizations, struck Novy's home in the early hours Thursday as the scientist and his family slept.
Novy is the second research scientist at OHSU's Oregon National Primate Research Center to have his property vandalized by the ALF this year. Last July, the group struck the home of Dr. Eliot Spindel, who uses monkeys to study ways to block fetal damage caused by pregnant smokers.
The Animal Liberation Front claimed responsibility for spray-painting Spindel's Lake Oswego garage door with the words, "ALF eyes on you!" And in an anonymous e-mail issued through the Animal Liberation Press Office, the saboteurs threatened that if Spindel did not quit the "torture industry," their next attack might include firebombs.
Dr. Jerry Vlasak, a Los Angeles surgeon and animal-rights activist who acts as spokesman for the Animal Liberation Press Office, said his organization supported attacks such as those on Novy and Spindel's homes.
"We support anything that works to either liberate animals or inflict economic sabotage on anyone who profits in any form or fashion from abusing animals," Vlasak told The Oregonian.
Officials at the Oregon National Primate Center said the Hillsboro facility, home to 4,200 monkeys, is a well regulated facility that takes care of animals and minimizes their pain and suffering to the best of their ability.
"A lot of what comes out of this place alleviates human and animal suffering," said Michael Conn, the acting head of the primate center's animal services division. "We think most people are going to share our outrage in these kind of (ALF) activities. This is just completely unacceptable."
Thanks for the ping.

We were fine. We’re to the south in Clark County and had no flooding in our immediate area and very little in the county. Had a lot of rain though, it was real wet for a while. :)
My pleasure, Salvation.
You are absolutely right about that and though I've criticized President Bush on certain things, I certainly cannot criticize him on this point!!!
On this he's been a true "champion of justice" and I heartily applaud what he's done on this score!!! Bravo Mr. President... BRAVO!!! ENCORE!!!
Why am I suddenly hungry for pickles?
These here need to be confined in the Jules Stein Black Eye Institute for ecoterrorists being given beatings with steel pipe:

Well as a matter of fact, some of them have roots in Eugene, and it stands to reason when Western Oregon is the site of so much eco-violence.
But you can’t lump all of Eugene into that mold. Many of Oregon’s major players in the business world call Eugene home, and it is the source of Oregon’s largest Republican political contributions. A lot of old money here quietly gets thing done. They can pick up the phone and call the President, and actually get him on the phone.
Not sure how it was that Clinton appointee and sometimes activist Judge Ann Aiken drew the cases (perhaps an agreement between defendants and prosecutors in return for their confessions), but Judge Hogan would have handed down a more meaningful terror enhancement.
I know there has to be some sane people there. In the last couple years (can’t remember when) the moonbat city council was considering a living wage and the business community told them how the cow ate the cabbage, the council dropped it like a hot potato.
Anything more been said about that since?
Two years ago or so a leftist mayor and council majority were elected (so they claim) so they don’t need to trumpet nutball BS like that to get into power. Things like that seem to only come up when folks are trying to get elected or re-elected. Not that they don’t do dumb things while in power, but I guess they feel the need to save that issue and a couple of others for talking points.
Thanks for the info, Dave.
