DES MOINES, Iowa - Republican Mitt Romney denies any responsibility for hiring illegal immigrants as workers at his home, insisting it was the fault of contractors and calling for tighter federal guidelines to verify the status of workers.
Asked by a reporter today if he shouldnt go the "extra mile" because of his business background and his strong advocacy of clamping down on illegal immigration in his presidential bid, the former Massachusetts governor shot back: "And whats the extra mile? So for instance, if I go to a restaurant, do I make sure all the waiters there are all legal?"

Amazing how a conservative could post an article by a left wing rag and look at it as gospel. Especially since the Boston Globe and every other left wing rag wants open borders and more illegals to vote democrat. It is dispicable that they would even attack Romney over this.
The Boston Herald is not a left wing rag.
You Mitt detractors say anything coming out of Mass is to the left when attacking Mitt....now they have all become conservatives eh?
Translate that please? I’ve donated money to him in the past. I actually like the guy, but he has to get his act together.
Mitt is the one the Democrats fear, that is why they run these articles ad infinitum. Increasingly, they are being used to go after Mitt here on FR. Just who are we working for....democrats?
“And there’s no reliable way to screen them, short of the sort of due diligence you would do if you were buying the contractor’s business (which would include checking the I9s and requiring him to verify the SSNs with the Social Security Administration and resolve any no-matches).”
The best way to screen is to ask for the same kind of ID that everyday people carry, drivers license, auto insurance if they are driving, and one or two other things, credit card or an ATM card, When you are doing that you are looking at and speaking to them, so you have a pretty good idea that they are either legal or at least very deep cover.
The easiest way is to let contractors know that the law will be brought in to play if they try to put an illegal alien on your property. Tell the contractor that if he wins the bid you are going to ID everyone of his men and put the fear of God in him. If you do that you probably won’t ever have to actually ID anyone because the shady guys will not continue the bid process, all this can be said over the phone during the first call.
Look at post 9, it can be done.
Then someone will get sued. It is the contractors responsibility and not the contractees responsibility. How many ways do you have to be told this?
Mitt is handling this issue fine. It is his liberal detractors in the press that keep pushing the point....suprised you haven’t figured this out.
“Then someone will get sued.”
I have no idea who told you that you cannot tell people to show you ID before you let them on your property, but that has been explained to you over and over.
Call your local police department and tell them your bizarre thought, and they will lecture you about safety.
As a contractor I know that customers can and should identify who the men that I take on their property are.
ID every single person that comes on your property.
Here are some guidelines for the customers, from a contractors web site. Look at number 4.
What You Can Do
1. Ask for a copy of the insurance by email BEFORE you book service. Only schedule AFTER you receive it.
2. Get a set price in writing.
3. Tell the company that you will be home for the service (even if you wont) and that you wish to speak to every member of the crew, to make sure each person understands exactly what you want in regards to service and what your concerns are in regards to your home. If there is any difficulty in this communication, or any member of the crew does not appear to be fully knowledgeable and trained, you will turn away service.
4. Ask for the names of every person who will be at your home, and verify the names when they arrive. It is your right to ask for identification of an person performing service on your property.
5. Most importantly, never pre-pay for service or provide a credit card number till after your service is completed. A company that cuts corners and saves cost by hiring illegal labor and defrauds their customers should not be trusted with the privacy and integrity of keeping your credit card on file.
6. Ask for a link to their Angie’s List reviews, or go the WWW.BBB.ORG and check out the company’s history.
The average person is not going to be inclined to run out and demand ID’s of those working on their lawn. Otherwise we wouldn’t have millions of illegals doing exactly that. To make Mitt Romney the poster child of our nations short comings is just plain stupid. We all share equally in the immigration problem.
I asked my contractor about those working on my property and she said they are legal. The average American probably doesn’t even do this.
“We all share equally in the immigration problem.”
No you and I aren’t the same on this issue, I first took a stand more than 40 years ago, and I have sacrificed many thousands of dollars, both as a customer and as a contractor to stick to my honorable and patriotic position.
Next week in fact I have to find laborers to help me lay a gas line, even if it costs me the job, I will not go pick up illegals. The laborers that I hire will be legal and they will have workman’s comp coverage.
I have been posting on illegal aliens threads for at least 6 years here, maybe longer. Read my tagline. I don’t recall ever seeing you on those threads. I would come down Mitt in a heart beat if I thought he was aiding and abetting illegals.
What I deplore are cheap media shots to bring him down on this while the same media want open borders and zillions of illegals to vote for democrats.
We were almost banned a few years ago because I think we were hurting Bush.
Romney was among the first few Governors to get state police involved with ice.
You seem to be a johnny come lately on this issue mainly to attact Mitt.
Holier than thou I suppose as we probably have 50 million illegals tromping around our landscape.
Some good points. You should advise us now in retrospect of what we should have been doing years ago but weren’t. We welcome your imput on this.
As I said before, I am very angry at those who attack politicians for the very same thing they have been pushing for years. Most of the anti Romney criticism, now seems to come from the left who want open borders and more democrat borders. Why are we helping them?
Even more ominous for the shooter .. the medical examiner autopsy came back and both of the perps were shot in the back
If they were coming at him he was justified ... if not, that's another story altogether.
I think the guy is going to have some serious legal problems.
“You should advise us now in retrospect of what we should have been doing years ago but werent.”
Don’t worry over spilt milk. It takes a very long time for something like this to catch on in a nation.
As you read some of the very recent threads you notice that some people are giving personal tales of insisting on no illegal workers, like post 9 on this thread.
We need to start reinforcing people taking a stand. In general people don’t like to be confrontational, especially to men that do physical work, that is why I want to encourage people to give the anti illegal statement on the phone, when they first start calling the yellow page ads.
When you first call for service let them know that you have an immigration bug up your behind and they better not send an illegal to you, because you are going to ID and you will call authorities if you need to.
After that if the crew shows up and you think they are OK, or if like most people you have already gone as far as you feel comfortable with then fine, I think that if we start doing that it will create an unwelcoming work climate for illegals and their employers.
Things like this snow ball and once many people are doing it, then it becomes easier and it will reduce the problem greatly.
That is a great point! Actually that is an awesome point. I will do that from now on. I see we can agree on some basic points....I find that encouraging. Getting the average American there is a topic in itself!
That's a good description of these poor attempts at "gotcha reporting" against Romney.
Yeah, but there was something about one of the Mexicans being in his yard when he was shot. The 911 person told him not to do it, that’s not going to help.
