Romney says it's not his fault illegal workers were at his home

DES MOINES, Iowa - Republican Mitt Romney denies any responsibility for hiring illegal immigrants as workers at his home, insisting it was the fault of contractors and calling for tighter federal guidelines to verify the status of workers.

Asked by a reporter today if he shouldn’t go the "extra mile" because of his business background and his strong advocacy of clamping down on illegal immigration in his presidential bid, the former Massachusetts governor shot back: "And what’s the extra mile? So for instance, if I go to a restaurant, do I make sure all the waiters there are all legal?"

There is no pass on this one for Romney. If he was unaware it would be questionable. BUT...he was already aware that the contractor used illegals. Romney was able to confront the issue with the contractor last year when he gave him a second chance. Thats when it became his responsibility to insure that the contractor was keeping his word. If he could confront him that time there is no reason he could not question whether or not the contractor was true to his word. Apparently the man did not even change out the workers. To use the excuse I was too busy campaigning doesn’t cut it.

Mitt is obviously running for "First Victim of the United States".
NOTHING is his fault. Everyone ELSE is responsible. Just give him the 'football' and everything will be alright.

According to the law, that is no excuse. You are guilty of a felony, Romney.

Good thing Mitt doesn't sell chinese made kids toys.

What? I'm supposed to check on my Chinese contractors? Lead is good. Kids love lead. Watch, they eat it.

I guess you would prefer to be able to bash Mitt without any response at all? If I see a thread bashing Mitt unmercifully, then I know it is from Fred supporters who are enraged that Fred has to actually work for the nomination, like Fred, they expected that the nomination would just be handed to him and when it isn’t, they are enraged, hence the nasty threads about Mitt.

The most stark example was his 1995 vote on the welfare overhaul, when he voted to preserve illegal aliens’ ability to receive federal benefits. He was one of just six senators to vote that way, joining four other Republicans and one Democrat.

And in 1996, as Congress considered a crackdown on illegal aliens, Mr. Thompson voted against setting up a system so employers could verify the legal status of their workers.

But WHY did he vote that way? The RATS frequently attach bad riders to good bills, might that have been the case? Did they intend to create a whole new government department when they set up the "system", for instance?

Gee, wonder if there are any illegal immigrants sell newspapers on my home town streets in Houston? Did the Houston Chronicle go the extra mile to make sure their contractors are not employing illegal immigrants?

You could not be further from truth with your allegations.
Not for me anyway. This is the time to be critical. Mitt knew this was going on...yet turned a blind eye to it. Then he runs on a platform of tough illegal immigration reform.
Pardon me for being skeptical.

I didn’t post this thread because I wanted to bash Mitt specifically. Fred and Mitt are my top choices. But I think that it is important that no matter who gets the nomination, whoever wins, needs to realize that the battle is not only on the border, but IN OUR OWN NEIGHBORHOODS. You can’t just depend on the federal government, don’t hire these people.

That aside, these illegals from at the Romney mansion are better off than the ones in Pasadena,TX.

They didn't burgularize a home though, did they?

No, but politics is a rough game. If Mitt wants to play, he’s going to get knocked around a bit.

Mitt’s problem is that he projects a squeaky-clean image and TELLS us that he has had a thorough political conversion, but then on basic, simple, obvious stuff—that he’s been called on before—like making sure illegals aren’t trimming his hedges, he doesn’t walk the walk. This was a stupid, STUPID, easily-avoided mistake for someone who wants to be POTUS.

Mitt’s spending millions to campaign, but all the money in the world can’t buy you common sense.

(And, before I get flamed for any religious hostility, I’m Mormon, and I don’t want Mitt as my nominee.)

Gee, I don’t know. Does Romney own the Houston Chronicle?

The point is the press appears to living in a glass house and throwing stones.

Also did the press investigate the other candidates, including the Democrats to determine if they had ever used illegal immigrants?

PS: Romney is not my choice, just think the press should ask all candidates the same question.
