Maryland Transit Administration Police said last night that they have found no evidence that the severe beating of a 26-year-old woman on a city bus this week was provoked and that they are investigating the attack as a possible racially motivated hate crime.
Nine middle school students have been charged as juveniles with aggravated assault and destruction of property in the Tuesday afternoon attack on a woman and her male companion on the No. 27 bus.
Police said yesterday that they have determined that there were two additional victims in the case - a third passenger and the bus operator who came to his assistance.
Investigators were examining video from a surveillance camera on the bus but had not completed their analysis.

No problem, people were just saying that I was making up the “N” word angle, when it was on the radio and website all morning. I know you can’t always believe what is on the radio and “words” are not justification of violence. I was just pointing out what some might say is an insight to what happened. WBAL cited witnesses, yes, they were black too. I know people from Hamden area and some ARE big time racist.
However, John Hopkins Hospital is surrounded by a 10’ fence topped in barbwire.
The Hospital is in East Balto. This incident occurred near the University.
But you’re correct. The Hospital has some protection because it is in a rough (though improving) part of town.
"I don't feel unsafe on the buses. I feel uncomfortable on the trippers," said Ed Cohen, president of the Transit Riders Action Council. "The general view of riders who ever happen to board one of those trippers is that they've boarded a rolling hellhole."
Indeed, to say nothing of illegal problems they are having over on the other side of the river.
thank you for posting that...I love going to Baltimore, most of the neighborhoods are great, some quite posh, and even the so-called dangerous areas of the city are generally fine. It’s a city people... this is a very sad incident indeed, thankfully they have the culprits.

Baltimore had a murder rate of about 43/100,000 population in 2006. For comparison, the murder rate for Philadelphia and Wash. DC were in the mid 20's/100,000, and San Diego was around 5.4/100,000.

Don’t know yet. Don’t know where ANY of these people are from - I don’t even know that the bus route would tell us anything.
You are assuming the whites were from Hampden. But we don’t know where any of these people came from. The whites could come from a trailer park outside Balto altogether, for all we know.
Yes, but generally speaking - general crime, other specifics, etc - they’re all about the same. Details of each year don’t tell me I’d rather be in Philly than Balto, etc. or vice-versa. Common sense says these cities all have the same basic problems.
Balto ping.
It’s worse than Houston. I think the problem is as much or more from riding the citybus as the neighborhood. I’ve only ridden the bus a few times here, but several of those times a bunch of middle schoolers have gotten on and made me very uncomfortable. And they weren’t even threatening me, just loud, tough looking, aggressive body language...
I think I can sense what happened. The kids were somewhat mildly harrassing this girl, telling her all the seats were taken, then she sat down anyway, and one of them probably said who does this white b!tch think she is, and then it was off to the races.
The buses in the Washington & Baltimore transit system are not safe for any white person to use.
The Examiner is reporting that some Poole Middle School students who were on the Number 27 bus at around 3 on Tuesday say the 26-year-old woman started the fight and used the N word.
The students say the woman and her boyfriend started the fight that left the woman with broken bones in her left eye socket and other injuries to her head.
One of students who rides that bus says the woman used the N word and punched one of the students riding the bus.
We’ll see what the video footage actually shows.
“The students say the woman and her boyfriend started the fight...”
Yeah, a couple of adults had nothing better to do than start a fight on a Baltimore city bus with a pack of teenage thugs.
You keep repeating these bits of info, but not what’s in the Sun article right here that is currently the most recent:
“Greene said that at the time the incident reports were taken, no child reported any spitting or knife being pulled. Gavrilis said the operator hadn’t mentioned any provocation.”
Sounds to me that the media were screwing it up again in a breathless attempt to “get it out 1st”, instead of getting it right. Later reports say the PARENTS claimed these things - and this note about the incident reports would seem to bolster that.
