TUCSON Two of three protesters arrested for trespassing on Fort Huachuca last month will have a detention hearing today.
The Rev. Jerome Zawada, 70, and Frances Elizabeth Lamb, 69, were jailed Tuesday when a federal magistrate expressed concerns of their past histories of arrests during protests.
The Franciscan from Las Vegas and the woman from Bend, Ore., were arrested Nov. 18 after they tried to enter the post, contending the Intelligence Center on the fort is the center of torture training.
Mary Burton Riseley, 65, of Cliff, N.M., also was arrested on Nov. 18. However, she was not put in jail at Tuesdays arraignment.
Zawada and Riseley, and a third person, Meredith Little of Tucson, met with fort officials on Nov. 16 to discuss the training at the Intelligence Center.
Their meeting included the commander of the 309th Military Intelligence Battalion and some of his staff members who attempted to explain the training techniques used for human intelligence collectors, during which Lt. Col. Jeff Jennings constantly repeated that the interrogation techniques do not include torture.
None of the three people at the meeting would believe Jennings, with Zawada being particularly adamant that any type of procedure to obtain information is torture.
Capt. Evan Seamone, of the forts legal office, where he is the head of the criminal division, is prosecuting the three people who are charged.
In a response to written questions, Seamone said the detention of Zawada and Lamb was based on the governments written requests and arguments.
They have both been scheduled for a more in-depth hearing to determine whether they should be kept in detention pending their trial dates, which have been set for early February, the captain said.
Jack Cohen-Joppa, a friend of Zawada, said the priest, Lamb and Riseley entered not guilty pleas Tuesday at the Tucson federal courthouse.
Seamone repeatedly declared that Zawadas and Lambs records show they are defiant and they are a danger to the community, Cohen-Joppa said.
In 2006, two priests, the Rev. Steve Kelly, 58, a Jesuit, and the Rev. Louis Vitale, 78, a Franciscan, were arrested for trespassing on the fort. The two men pleaded no contest to the charge in October, and each were sentenced to five months in federal prison. Seamone prosecuted that case, too.
During their legal maneuvering, the priests defense attorney attempted to have the emphasis changed from being a case of trespassing to putting torture on trial, an attempt that failed.
Today, Seamone plans to call witnesses in an attempt to keep Zawada and Lamb behind bars pending their scheduled Feb. 4 trial.

More than old enough to know better.
LoL! Couldn’t happen to a better bunch. I hope they rot in there, or a least bad gout. Too bad She-man wasn’t one of them.
Stupid is as stupid does.
Nice tagline, BTW. I like it.
Not the first time for the Rev The Rev. Jerome A. Zawada, a Franciscan priest from Cedar Lake, Ind., said he has spent more than 30 months in federal prison protesting nuclear arms and is proud to be a part of the movement to close the (School of the Americas)institute at Fort Benning.
The 69-year old Frances Elizabeth Lamb sounds like a professional protestor. On Sept 17, she was arrested and taken to jail for disorderly conduct when she allegedly lay down in the street and blocked traffic during an anti-Iraq war protest in Bend, OR on Friday about noon, police reported. A war protest in BEnd, Or?
Bend, 52K population and nowhere near anything military - I take back the professional part - delusional more like!
Thanks
