British Xmas card mocks Polish pope
06.12.2007
Poles in the UK protest against a Christmas card which features John Paul II and George W. Bush.
The deceased John Paul II is lying on a catafalque. George Bush is standing over him. The speech bubble next to his face says: "What happened to Santa?". This Christmas card is selling like hot cakes in Britain, causing outrage amongst the Polish community.
Poles have already informed they would organise street protests.
"It's appalling. Using the image of the deceased Holy Father is a scandal. Muslims protested at the cartoons deriding Muhammad. Why should offending Christians go disregarded?", says Tomasz Giza, who has lived in London for 5 years, quoted by "Dziennik".
The case has been discussed in Polish Radio London 24, with hundreds of listeners expressing their outrage on the phone. It was then that an idea to organise street protests was conceived.
"Retailers should be banned from selling the postcards. Even if the deceased person were not the pope, it would still be grossly disrespectful. I mean, it is a funeral photo, after all", says Karolina Stolecka, working in one of London hotels, quoted by "Dziennik".
It is disrespectful, but it isn’t anti-polish any more than showing Bush making a comment about “guess the cherry trees are safe now” while looking at a George Washington lying in state would be anti-American.
Its a stupid Bush joke, that happens to be tasteless in that it involves a dead Pope.
You're free to not do so if you don't like it.
It’s time for all Catholics, worldwide, to riot and burn cars in the streets.
You are right. I am Catholic and part Polish, and the only target of the humor here is Bush.
And I am free to be offended when others do.
You guys are SOOOOOOOO royally screwed!
Sure be offended all you’d like. Isn’t freedom great?
On St. Nicholas’ optional memorial as well.

Keep it up Satan, there’s a beatdown coming.
I’m sure if someone took a pic of one of our grandpa or grandma’s funerals with us on it at a young age or at present) praying... with what happened to Santa or some such saying (granted, probably no red and white), no one would like it. Some will say the relationship’s not the same, but none would say it was a joke about me, the fact that my dead relative was in it doesn’t matter, they’re gone... who cares.
I wonder how many shelters, food pantries, hospitals, nursing homes, third world countries the cardmaker visited over 25 years? I wonder if he’s around for his family at all. The hate and thought process it took to think this up (in all fairness, it may have been his first thought when he saw the picture, who knows), the steps to put it on a Christmas card... that’s too deep for me. Smells like Kurtzman.
Didn’t post correctly: I meant to say that I haven’t see nthis card anywhere, in spite of the fact it’s supposed to be ‘selling like hot cakes’.
That’s actually pretty funny. Both Bush and the Pope can take it. Especially the Pope since he’s in a much better place.
Unless you’re a Catholic basher, then he’s in hell.
So it’s OK to make a joke out of the Pope’s death? I’m sick of the double standard! Why is it OK to trash Christianity? Why are people arrested for naming a bear with the wrong name?
Christians will not riot in the streets and chop heads off over this!
Only ONE group goes ballistic over the slightest thing. And they get away with it!
Ouch. Very tasteless and degrading using the death of a very pious and holy Pope to mock our President.
Johannes Paul was simply too big to care about such BS. Therefore we should not care either.
BTW - There were much more disgusting events than that. Maybe you remember the “Popebuster” (after the film “Gostbuster”) movement during the Pope visit in Holland??!
ha ha,
not.
Get out of my head!
And this site alone is proof that there is anti-British bigotry in America, as well as great affection.
I suppose you will be wanting us horrible horrible Limeys to take our troops out of Iraq and Afghanistan now, as well as stop SAS/MI5/MI6 ops against Al-Queda.....
The earliest Christians used the Chi, as well as the paired Chi-Rho symbols that the Church still uses to this day.
I agree that a mundane X doesn’t really do it for me either. It would be nice if some folks would actually use a real Chi or the Chi-Rho.
Understand the history. Don’t think most X-ians do. They even go so far as to call people named Christina Xtina.
Jesus was the Christ. Christ is a title to concentrate on. Calling him X in English speaking society is just a shorthand way of ignorring the implications of whom one is referring to.
