One of the primary rules when firing a gun is to IDENTIFY YOUR TARGET!!!

If you can’t, you DON’T SHOOT!

Its a shame idiots like this one give the majority of good hunters a black eye in the anti-gun, anti-media press.

My sympathies for the owner of this fine dog and for the dog.

I hope someday this idiot hunter runs into another idiot hunter with his same lack of common sense - in very think brush.

The debate here is over “hunters” vs “shooters”

Think about it........Jeff

They are not shooting someone’s pet; they are shooting an animal running loose and endangering wildlife and human beings. If that describes your pet; it isn’t a pet....

You deduced all that from these people walking their dog on state forest land?

What indication did you see in that article that the dog was endangering wildlife or human beings?

***************

What indication did you see that the distinction would have made a difference to him?

What kind of hunter doesn’t positively ID what he’s shooting?

Your statement has nothing to do with anything I posted.

I am well versed on the 500 ft. rule. I have had my siding replaced TWICE due to being hit. Also, a broken window, dishes (kitchen cabinets on backside of house which faces the hillside the shots came from). My neighbors on both sides have also been hit. My neighbor’s above ground pool took a couple of shells and two other houses (downhill) rec’d water damage. First time (12 yrs ago) no arrests. Second time (8 or 9 yrs ago) three ‘hunters’ got nabbed... on a residential property (no permission given). Our insurer went after their insurers. This all happened in a suburban neigborhood. My 2 claims were over $16,000 alone. My neighbor’s and I have flood lights back there now (some have said runway lights) to make the houses visible at all times (these incidents happened at dawn). We are incredibly lucky that no one has been shot.

“Gives hunters a bad name”

Agree with all you say. However, what would be wrong folks practicing some common sense? Such as, not walking their dog, especially allowing it to run loose, in areas where deer hunting is going on? Besides, my poop detector is pinging on this incident - it is just possible that this person walking their dog may well have been one of those environmental whacko types who was out in the woods attempting to spook the deer so that the hunters would not be successful in their attempts to take deer....

Another idiot hunter shooting at what he could barely see, hunting in state parks is also a very stupid idea.

I woulda replaced the siding with brick after the first incident.

What is your definition of endangering wildlife? Aren’t hunters doing just that? Is it legal to shoot a crow? Have you ever?

Finances did not permit brick or just moving (I was so rattled I just wanted to sell.) Insurance paid to replace the siding. Our agent said his office always has open claims. We have been lucky...nothing close by here in a few years...area is even more built up. The backyard lighting has helped alot. Our neighborhood sits on a downward slope...so hunters would go up on the ridge and shoot at the deer below.

Dunno. I sometimes hear of some guy from back east bagging a cow, thinking he was shooting at an elk.

There was an idiot up north, I think New Hampshire or close, who shot a guys wife in the back yard of their property because he thought the white gloves she was wearing was a deer tail (in the up "flag" position of fleeing). I believe he did get some jail time.

People that stupid have to make you just cringe...

"I feel so terrible," Verville said. "I feel ignorant in a way, because I didn't know that hunting was allowed in the forest. I used to take Smokey out there all the time. I take him off his leash and let him run around, and I walk the paths. I call him and he comes right back."

What do you bet there is a leash law where this happened?

LOL! Yup, us nasty old hunters are just a big time death threat to the wildlife out there. Forget the fact our license fees, donations, and CARE mean the wildlife still have homes.

Yes I have blasted crows; especially when Farmers complain they are taking their crops and BEG hunters to take some out.
