Story of the Unelectable November 3, 2003 by: Alan Moretti

"Freedom of men under government is to have a standing rule to live by, common to everyone of that society...and not to be subject to the inconstant, uncertain, arbitrary will of another man". - Locke

America's founding fathers formed this country not for greed or profit, but to escape from a tyrannical king that ruled the colonies like a dictator. They rebelled and framed a government controlled by checks and balances, never giving complete power to one individual or party. The founding fathers feared "egotism". They also wanted to avoid being controlled by an ever growing government called the "bureaucracy".

The framers of the Constitution were careful in forming a government with limited power over the American public. Government's purpose is to protect our lives, property, and personal freedom. The government should be contained, and not interfere with our everyday lives.

"It is the highest impertinence and presumption, therefore, in kings and ministers, to pretend to watch over the economy of private people, and to restrain their expense, either by sumptuary laws, or by prohibiting the importation of foreign luxuries. They are themselves always, and without any exception, the greatest spendthrifts in the society. Let them look well after their own expense, and they may safely trust private people with theirs. If their own extravagance does not ruin the state, that of their subjects never will." Adam Smith (Economist)

The creators of our government never imagine the people of New Jersey suffocating under a different type of tyrannical control. It is the movement towards more government spending. New Jersey political leaders seem infatuated with building an even larger government, causing taxes to further increase.

My take is, we don't have enough people to cover the increase of tax rates while the state experiences government expansion. Our state politicians are gambling on a miracle, perhaps a sudden surge of population growth.

If I were to run for office, I would try to return to the ideals of our forefathers. Today's New Jersey politicians avoid a smaller form of government. Politicians often make promises they can not deliver. Instead political leaders are infected by the "big bureaucratic government spending virus," obtaining money from all levels of government.

Practically speaking, in the State of New Jersey, a candidate with my ideals is probably unelectable. I might be savvy, but my weakness lies in truly believing in a limited government. I believe we have a right to live life without continual government oversight.

I doubt this plan would fit in Trenton. It seems that our elected officials are too busy with the current spending spree using our tax dollars. There are few exemplary representatives in Trenton today. Our current Governor, James McGreevy (D.) is not one of them and certainly has not been able to fulfill his promise to cut property taxes.

After hearing the impersonation of Arnold Schwarzenegger attacking Assemblywoman Rose Heck (R. - Dis. 38), it is clear that attack politics are alive and well in the wonderful State of New Jersey. New Jersey is quickly becoming the most disgraceful and least appetizing state in the union to participate in politics, even further discouraging young and daring idealistic candidates to enter the field.

The upcoming election for New Jersey Governor has become a free for all in the Republican Party. If the Republicans choose a candidate who is pro-life, he or she could be dismissed as an ultra- conservative. Gov. McGreevey still has one of the lowest approval ratings in the nation, for a while it was lower than the recalled Governor Grey Davis (D.) of California. This doesn't guarantee a Republican win for the governship of New Jersey, it just means the GOP better be smart when selecting their candidate during the primary season.

Democrats say the Republicans are to blame for the state's deficit. I don't buy that for a second. The Democrats have been in Trenton for as long as the Republicans, so why the blame game?

I still look to the elected officials in Trenton because they no longer seem to stand by their promises and ideals. Instead Democrats and some Republicans are more concerned about their own "egotism" and not about the well being of the people of New Jersey.

Here in New Jersey we need to establish a contract with the people, no more hollow promises. We need leaders to go into the state house and find ways to produce more jobs, lower taxes, reduce crime, and establish a good fiscal government and honest legislation.

Have we forgotten the three main principles on which our forefathers built the foundation of this country? Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.

I am a firm believer in the right to defend my family and myself with a firearm, prevent government control over my personal liberty and property, and the support of continued growth of free market enterprise.

Dr. Murray Sabrin in his column recently expressed that he is an addict to individual liberty and free enterprise. I too may consider myself an addict to honesty and commitment in government promises. This is just common sense.

The future of New Jersey politics is predictable. There is no doubt in my mind that Gov. McGreevey is "fineto". The big question is who is going to emerge as the leader in the Republican Party to stand by his or her principles, and how will they become the electable candidate?

This week, let's hope the majority of people in New Jersey vote for what we need the most of - fiscally responsible politicians who are willing to create a contract of good government for the people of this state.

Take Care, -Alan
