From the very end of the article:

“There is no Second Amendment in Europe. Even European politicians from the so-called “right,” like Mr. Sarkozy, are horrified at the suggestion that citizens should be allowed to protect themselves against criminals. Last year, Mr. Sarkozy told French radio: “Security is the responsibility of the state. I am against the private ownership of firearms. If you are assaulted by an armed burglar, he will use his weapon more effectively than you anyway, so you are risking your life.”

The result is that in France only the criminals are armed, while decent citizens, even those as brave as Anne-Lorraine, perish.”

Well, the good will I felt after the eletion of Sarkozy is now flushed. He is a statist like the others. Same sh!t, different texture.

I don’t understand how Sarko can so sanguinely say, “If you are assaulted by an armed burglar, he will use his weapon more effectively than you anyway, so you are risking your life.” He’s a smart man, so his use of the word ‘more effectively’ is beyond my comprehension. If he had said ‘with reckless abandon’ instead, I could’ve understood (disagreed, but understood). But ‘more effectively’?! How does he know that? How dare he say that?!

If you are assaulted by an armed burglar, he will use his weapon more effectively than you anyway, so you are risking your life...

That sentence caught my eye as well. I've heard similar statements from gun controllers in the U.S. as well - "he'll only take it from you." These are clearly not informed statements from anyone who actually owns firearms, because they're simply untrue.

A little range time will tell you who shoots and who only plays at it. 90% of the criminal class only plays at it. For them a gun is a magic wand, and if they're the only ones armed, it really is. If they aren't, it's just a gun.

The real irresponsibility here is to allow the criminal population to own and employ firearms without consequence and to deny that to innocent civilians. That isn't simply permitting a dangerous situation to eventuate, it's actively creating one.

The lesson provided by the Brits begging Americans to send firearms to them as private individuals during WWII has faded into the oblivion of history....
