(AP) The family of Justin Barker, the victim in the "Jena Six" racial beating case in Louisiana, has filed a civil lawsuit against the local school board, the parents of the six young men accused of beating him and the adult members among the six.
The lawsuit was filed Nov. 29 in state district court, the Alexandria Daily Town Talk newspaper reported.
The case and its racial overtones, sparked by the hanging on campus of nooses, a traditional symbol of lynch mobs, have attracted the attention of U.S. civil rights leaders, who led a large protest and said the original charges against the Jena Six were too strict.
David and Kelli Barker and their son allege that seven Jena High School students attacked Justin on Dec. 4, 2006, as he walked out of the school's gym.
The suit names the attackers as Mychal Bell, Jesse Beard, Theo Shaw, Bryant Purvis, Carwin Jones and Robert Bailey Jr., as well as a seventh student who has not been officially named by law enforcement as a part of the attack.
The lawsuit alleges that school employees were not adequately supervising students or maintaining discipline.
The Barkers are asking for a jury trial.
Bell pleaded guilty Monday to a misdemeanor second-degree battery charge and was sentenced to 18 months in jail. The other members of the Jena Six are awaiting court appearances.
Barker spent several hours in the emergency room after the attack but was discharged and attended a school event the night after the attack.
Good for him. It doesn’t pay to be a Real victim these days, with so many faux victims. I hope he wins a BIG settlement.

Why should the thugs get all that cash, just for being thugs?

Justice wouldn’t be served in this case unless the six thugs were convicted of a “hate crime”.

When I was in the US Navy back in the Seventies, I was jumped by eight black guys (I’m white) walking to my barracks down at Cecil Field in Florida.
Brazenly, they attacked me in between barracks, in full view of both facing sides of the barracks, but it did happen later at night.
No reason, but I was walking along, and someone kicked me in the ass, really hard. I whirled around to see a guy standing there, someone I didn’t know, and asked him what the hell he did that for. He said he didn’t like my hat (squadron hat) whatever that meant, and I just said, “Well, you and I are going to sort this out...” and began to advance on him.
Immediately, the other seven guys came out from around the building, surrounded me and began circling around me. It was pretty scary, and I figured I was going to get my ass kicked no matter what I did, so I launched myself at the guy who kicked me, and they all leaped on me and began kicking and punching me.
I curled up in a ball, and fortunately for me, they had all been drinking (I could smell it) and they were kicking each other’s legs as much as they were kicking me. I don’t know how long it went on, but I suspect it wasn’t more than 15 to 30 seconds. When I sensed a slight lull, I leaped up and darted between two of them to run into the barracks, and they chased me. When I got on the landing, there was a swab there, and I grabbed it and began swinging it like a baseball bat. They backed off, then grouped again and disappeared around the corner of the building. I went inside, unsure of what to do, then immediately walked several hundred yards back to the hangar where the First Class in charge of me was on duty. I figured I would ask him how to handle it, and I was shaking with adrenaline.
His name was Petty Officer Woods...when I told him, he looked at me and said “You want to get some guys together and go find them and kick the shit out of them?”
Woods was black.
For the next five months I was there, every time I walked past a black guy I didn’t know, I would look at him and try to figure out if it was one of them. Funny thing was...I could not remember what ANY of them looked like at all. I was a complete blank. But I suspiciously eyed them all.
The good thing was...if it hadn’t been for Petty Officer Woods and his offer to go chase those guys down, I might have got to be pretty prejudiced towards any black men I came across. As it was, it took me a while to just let it go.
This guy here got beat pretty hard. I hope he puts the bastards who did it to him and the people who enabled them in the poor house. Looks like jail is out of the question.
I had a similar experience in high school but unfortunately my Petty Officer Woods, black assistant principal, sided with those who jumped me and attempted to have me expelled with the thugs. Fortunately the school’s principal and other faculty knew that I was a good student who would never conceive of instigating violence with the said thugs and they ultimately prevented my expulsion. The ratio of 6 on 1 also helped.
To this day I still do not judge people based on race however I do believe that a culture of violence exists among many urban black males and I firmly believe that many of them only understand violence as a means of communication and expression. I also believe that the rise of this country’s Hispanic population will cause racially motivated violent crime by black males to increase due to competition between the two races and cultures.
This country’s population is quickly separating along socioeconomic lines and soon a minority of minorities will exist that is desperate, uneducated and violent.

I think that you’re right. The trouble is that these people have never been raised by adults. Today in Philly and Pittsburgh when blacks gun one another down we are told that some white fellow in Juniata County (the sticks, and I don’t say that as a put down) has to give up his guns. Never is blame assigned to the perpetrators on a stage of right vs wrong. Their wrong behavior is rubber stamped as being caused by ‘too many guns’ (inanimate objects cause crime), or poverty (ignoring the fact that most ‘poor people’ do not commit crimes).
