It’s one thing to reason as we do, but it’s entirely another to put an actual bullet in a guy over a VCR. Would I? Probably so.

I probably would not shoot someone over a VCR, but once I even see a hint of deadly force, weapons, deadly threats, then they are fair game. No in the case of a VCR, I would call the police and detain them, probably at the same time.

When I was attacked in the park, I could have easily have killed the guy, but I did not, instead holding him down while a nice couple called the cops. While waiting on the cops I made sure the guy knew that if he kept attacking people indiscriminately that eventually he would end up dead by attacking the wrong guy.

I probably would not shoot someone over a VCR,...

I can understand that.  I'm not as willing to allow someone to cart off with my goods.  My VCR is evidently more important to me than his life is to him.

...but once I even see a hint of deadly force, weapons, deadly threats, then they are fair game.

Absoluetly...

No in the case of a VCR, I would call the police

By that time he'd be gone...

...and detain them, probably at the same time.

Good luck with that.

The detaining of an individual is where the problem comes in.  You have to expose yourself to bodily injury to do it.  I don't care how capable you are, there are some things you can't prevent.  If the jabs you in the eye, picks up something and injurs you with it, you could be damaged for life.  Which is more important, his longevity or you remaining healthy?  That's where I'm coming from when I say I'd just put the guy out of my misery.  I've got not obligation to care what happens to him.  I do have an obligation to prevent people from destroying my home piece by piece.

When I was attacked in the park, I could have easily have killed the guy, but I did not, instead holding him down while a nice couple called the cops.

Which in spirit I support.  Not eveyone can do that.  And many of those who think they can, will have to struggle to do it and could become seriously injured in the process.  I haven't seen stats on it, but I'd wager many people in this nation suffer serious injury each year trying not to use excessive force against a person who has stolen their property.

While waiting on the cops I made sure the guy knew that if he kept attacking people indiscriminately that eventually he would end up dead by attacking the wrong guy.

Which is exactly what he banked on.  I don't mean to give you a hard time, but these guys know all too well that we'll extend to them treatments that they would never extend to us or our loved ones.
