BERKELEY -- Berkeley police on Tuesday arrested a 64-year-old Sea Scout leader on six felony counts of sexual assault on boys ages 13 to 17 who are members of the maritime youth group.
Eugene Evans of Kensington, who has been the skipper of the Berkeley group's boat for 35 years, was booked into the Berkeley police jail. Police served search warrants at his home and "several other locations," according to a police statement.
The group maintains its boat, the Farallon, at the Berkeley Marina.
Police said charges could include lewd and lascivious acts against a minor younger than 14, oral copulation with a minor younger than 16, and penetration with a foreign object of a minor younger than 14. The alleged crimes occurred over "several years," the statement said.
Police said they "have yet to determine definitively how long Evans may have been molesting youth," and they believe there may be more victims.
Evans is a retired teacher from Encinal High School in the city of Alameda, according to the statement.
The Sea Scouts lost a Supreme Court Ruling against the city of Berkeley in 2006 over gay rights issues. The group sued the city for revoking its city funded berth at the marina because the group refused to disavow the Boy Scouts of America's exclusion of gays and atheists.

So the Sea Scouts lost their free berth at the Berkeley Marina because their organization does not permit gay scout leaders. Berkeley thought this was bigoted and not out of any sense of protection for the scouts in their charge, so they revoked the gift. NOW it’s learned that a homosexual did find his way into the organization AND did exactly that thing the Sea Scout policy was supposed to prevent. If I was a member of that scouting group I just wouldn’t know what to think; hell, I don’t know what to think anyway. I’d be angry: go to the Berkeley government and demand the berth be returned at no charge; since they did have the homosexual in their organization, they did what the city wanted, AND paid the price...may as well get the berth back.
This Sea Scout leader sounds like the kind of Scout leader Philadelphia wants to force on the Boy Scouts.

Actually, the gay rights suit had nothing to do with the story. They just kind of tossed it in there as a way of saying “nanny nanny boo boo”.

I’d say it’s “premature”.
This man should get the death penalty. This is a good reason why homosexuals should not be allowed in the Scouts. Just a bunch of sickos.
The problem, of course, is that a lot of people who want to work with kids should not, under any circumstances, be given access to kids.
The solution, of course, is to put controls in place to ensure that no adult in any of these groups is ever alone with children. If you can’t have two independent adults available to supervise any activity, the activity is a no-go, end of story.
Berkeley? I don’t understand why they went to the trouble of arresting him. In Berkeley they will give him the keys to the city and a life time subscription to Boy’s Life magazine.
Do you suppose the City of Berkeley will reconsider its revocation of the city funded berth at the marina now that they have discovered a gay person was in charge of the Sea Scouts? That should make the Berkeley city officials very happy that they had one of their own in charge after all!

The principle of presumption of innocence is (far) older than the United States. We don't see much of it on FR though.
If any FReepers have evidence pertinent to this case, go see the DA. Otherwise stop the lynching already.

The problem with that logic is most homosexuals define all pedophiles as simply that . . . pedophiles, neither heterosexual nor homosexual. Show them a man who has sexually molested 200 boys (but not a single girl) and they'll say "he's not a homosexual -- he's just a pedophile."
