Funny you say that. If you get in a front-end collision, the impact energy will actually travel around the driver's compartment and damage the rear end of the car. The tires are also designed as part of the energy absorption system. Yes, it's designed that well.
Actually it is. A head-on collision results in the crash energies being routed around the passengers and into the rear structure - to wit: the whole car goes to pieces, end to end, instead of the energies affecting the occupants. There's a video out there somewhere depicting this (quite impressive actually).
