Donnell Williams had just gotten out of the bath tub, wearing only a towel around his waist, when he turned the corner to see guns pointing right at him.
"I ain't never been so scared," says Williams.
Police forced entry into Williams home while responding to a shooting, but it turned out to be a false call. They had no idea at the time the call wasn't real and that Williams is hearing impaired. Without his hearing aid he is basically deaf.
"I kept going to my ear yelling that I was scared. I can't hear! I can't hear!"
Officers were worried about their own safety because at the time it appeared Williams was refusing to obey their commands to show his hands. That's when they shot him with a Taser.
Deputy Chief Robert Lee says, "This one occurred on the worst of calls, that being a shooting. The first few minutes getting control of the scene are very, very important."
Once the facts were all sorted out, officers repeatedly apologized to Williams. Police wish it never happened, but with the information they had at the time, their choices were limited.
"Do I wish there would have been some way they were notified in advance this gentleman was hearing impaired? I certainly do. No one is happy with the way it worked out," says Lee.
Williams was not hurt in the incident. Police say the shooting call came from a cell phone but they still don't know who made it or why.
The case is being reviewed by the department.
Do I wonder when the act of asking yourself a question and then answering that question in the same breath first started? I do.
Is this something than we see more and more of on a regular basis? It could be that this is something that has gone on for a long time, but is being done more often.
Is there anyone out there that is wondering the same thing? Maybe. Maybe not. I'd be interested in finding out.
Is this line of questioning completely unrelated to the thread? It is, but still, I just had to ask. And answer.
The man was naked except for a bath towel. Where did the police think he was hiding the weapon that put them in immediate danger?
In the 1950s and 1960s, there were a considerable number of racist lawmen, as there are LEOs today who are not reluctant to assert "authoritah". However, the reaction, this time fueled not by the print media and TV, but by blogs and You Tube (the confrontation involving a young motorist and a Utah state trooper was viewed over a million times), may wind up interfering with legitimate law enforcement and causing a weakening of public order. I do not think it is the Muslims, but the Left, and their useful idiot friends among libertarians and conspiracists, who are behind the attack.
Agreed ... it was a thought ... I’d be curious to learn where the cell call came from ... if it can be traced ... and therein lies the suspicion.
That in itself is a purty darn big clue that maybe, just maybe we might have made a mistake here......aw hell, we're here so might as well shoot somebody.

It's a hypothetical, of course, but I wonder if you'd be so sanguine if it happened to you.
The cops were worried that he was going to leave the bathroom in a towel?
A dripping wet man with one hand by his ear and one hand holding up his towel...
COP: "Let me see your hands! ZAP!!

Try to convince me that there are not a lot of out-of control, ego/machismo-driven thugs in police uniforms...

Maybe he was gonna snap them with the towel?
That really stings you know.
Hey, c'mon...
those things can cause some pretty nasty welts in the hands of a good "snapper"...

thats awesome
haha
I would think several million dollars from the PD department will make him hear better in the future.
hmmmm....how do you figure this?
Courtesy comment:
Depending of course on whether he wants to sue the cops for an egregious mistake.
This bashing in people doors by the cops is happening way to much in the last few years.
In this case the cops compounded their stupid mistake by tasing a guy with nothing more than a towel around his private parts.
I am surprised that they did not shoot and kill this poor man and then claim he had something sticking out from underneath the towel.
We are protected under the Constitution from these kinds of actions.
As to the question:
With millions of dollars he will be able to get a Rush Limbaugh implant.
Or he might like a blind person who gets a seeing eye dog he could get a hearing pet like mine.
I am partially deaf and my pet Mr. Melvin Cat runs in circles when someone rings the doorbell.
He could probably get the implant now, if he chose to have one. Most insurances cover it (including Medicare and Medicaid).
You have a hearing dog? I just got my “Dogs for the Deaf” newsletter - I used to donate to them.
Have a good day.
It’s a good thing it was only a tazing he got, and that he’s okay. What a fiasco. Are they going to track down that cell call?
Is there a donutwatch or “bad cop no donut” ping list?
