Italy defends Iran’s nuclear rights

ROME: Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi Tuesday repeated Rome’s opposition to any military action against Iran over its nuclear programme, saying Tehran had a right to use civilian nuclear energy.

“I would like to reiterate once again Italy’s opposition to any military solution. Such a solution will not only not resolve the problem but also usher in new destabilising scenarios in the whole region,” Prodi said at a banquet hosted for visiting Saudi King Abdullah. Prodi said Iran had every right “to develop a peaceful nuclear programme.” Prodi and his Foreign Minister Massimo D’Alema have both spoken out strongly in favour of negotiations with Tehran while not ruling out stepped-up sanctions.

Permanent members Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States, plus Germany, are backing a third UN Security Council resolution and vote on Iran, unless upcoming reports by the UN nuclear watchdog and the European Union show “a positive outcome.” But China and Russia, which could in theory veto further sanctions, have yet to call publicly for more punishment against the Islamic republic. afp

I’m descended from European nations that aren’t friendly today, too. But you and I...we’re Americans. We can be as American as our relatives who fought against fascism during WWII, if we want to.

The US administration doesn’t disagree with Iran’s civilian fuel cycle...which is WRONG.

It’s the UNKNOWN weapons program than can’t be verified that concerns the elites.

It's very troublesome. I am surprised that a member state of the EU has broken rank with the unified voice in which the EU's foreign policy directives have always been conveyed.

This sets a terrible precedent for the effort to rein in such rogue states like Iran. I suspect there's a huge order for Italian boots for the Mullahs to jackboot their particular brand of fascism worldwide.

Prodi’s Party leans communist. Berlusconi’s Party leans fascist (even includes a sub-party that was all about fascism, when it was an independent Party). It’s the left-wing, right-wing European thing.

Well, for a country that makes France seem like a military power, what can you expect?

Massimo D’Alema is a radical old school, unreformed Communist. Both of his parents were politically active radical Communists. As long as he is the FM of Italy, Italy has no international voice worth the concern of any industrial first world country.

Italy isn't a major power anymore. The big three European powers (UK, France, and Germany) are aware of the problem with Iran. If the Italians want to look like idiots, so be it. They don't have major political power anymore. And they are sort of the black sheep in European politics since some of Mussolini's political descendants (not to mention real ones) occasionally get into the European Parliament.
