Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez lost a tight vote on Sunday in a referendum on giving him new powers and scrapping term limits on his left-wing rule.
The national electoral authority said early on Monday the "No" camp won 51 percent of the vote compared to the pro-Chavez "Yes" camp's 49 percent.
It said the trend could not be reserved and declared Chavez the loser.
The referendum vote on a raft of reforms would have allowed Chavez to run for reelection indefinitely, control Venezuela's foreign currency reserves, appoint loyalists over regional elected officials and censor the media if he declares an emergency.
Chavez has said he wants to rule for life and turn Venezuela into a socialist state. But defeat will likely put the Cuba ally under intense pressure to slow or halt his self-declared socialist revolution and step down when his term ends in 2013.
Chavez called the referendum vote "a photo finish".

I believe that a miracle happened.
sw
I’m only shocked he didn’t pay better attention to the Stalinist guide to “voting” (he still has time).
Color me surprised! I figured for sure with him counting the votes there was no way he could lose. Wonder if the will do what all good democrats everywhere do, keep counting until they win?
The real vote was probably 2-1 against him and he was prepared for 3-2.
He can probably repeat his referendum annually or even monthly until he gets his vote prep right.
The Chavez opposition might concede defeat just to get him to “shut up”!(sarcasm on)
Get to work.
That is all.
Excellent news. The clown dictator lost this one.
Sean Penn and Hollywood are in grieving.
HA HA!
I hear some of New Jersey's finest political minds are headed down there to assist with the recount...
Actress from the 80’s and early 90’s. Was the female officer that worked with anny Glover in “Predator 2” and Sean Penn’s hispanic girlfriend in “Colors”. Was in several more movies and preiodically still acts.
Chill...this too will be rectified posthaste! ;*)
LOL!
Winston Churchill really knew how to write and speak. Now we have inarticulate soundbites and ghost writers.
Too little too late. Who put/elected this nut in that position?! Huh? Now they finally saw his true colors and are running scared too death! 51% to 49% is too thin for a strong rebuttal to Chavez.
Watch him in the next 5 Years chewing his 49% in to Socialism/Communism Shangri-La and nobody is going to do squat!
Let's have this discussion 2 Years from now!
His term finishes in 2013?????
This means nothing then.
“Too little too late. Who put/elected this nut in that position?! Huh?”
Too late for what? Sounds kinda melodramatic. The Venezuelan people who voted for Chavez put him in that position. You think Venezuelans are the only people to elect reckless charismatic populists? This slim victory went a long way in emboldening the opposition. That should be encouraged. He’ll break apart his “reform package” and some will pass, some won’t. But before Venezuela starts looking anything remotely like Zimbabwe, Chavez will find himself on the losing end of a coup.
You think so, huh!...reread the latest news coming out of that paradise...he already tighten the grip on the Press, and monopolized the Oil Industry under his command and a host of other "little" measures to entrench himself as a "El Commandant" as required in those South American Banana Republics.
Talk to me in 2010.
