I remember reading an account of Amererican CB’s going to the airport to start the work of rebuilding the runways for the airlift, and finding that the citizens of Berlin were already there in force since before dawn. Many of them were dressed in rags and had no shoes, and they were clearing the rubble from the bombed out runway with shovels, wheelbarrows, and their bare hands.
