She's only being pragmatic about political reality.

In the end, she will be spot on....

The party changed direction after much groundwork was layed by Reagan, GHWB and GWB. They new what it would take to beat the Dem's and both opened up the big tent Republican party. They all three took heat from the base and Conservative writers for it.

They were right. Conservatives were wrong but they don't yet know it and may never accept it.

I''m afraid the return to 30 years in the minority wilderness is certain because of what has been done by conservatives acting out in a populist manner with no thought to the consequences. They even called what they were doing....principled. But don't they all. History is replete with principled political stupidity.

If the Republican returns to 30 years in the minority wilderness, they will have been ‘led’ there by Jorge Bush and Karl Rove, and their stupid forcing of the amnesty/open borders issue. Jorge tried to get this through the House since 2001, and was turned back year-after-year. Polls have shown for years that 70% plus of US citizens are opposed to the non-enforcement of immigration policies, and even the high, 1,000,000+, legal immigration. Bush and Rove were fools to continue pushing their amnesty nonsense when the majority of all US citizens so clearly did not want it. It is they who have damaged the party, and they will be responsible for whatever happens in the next few elections. How stupid of them to force and force such a divisive issue, especially with so little likelihood that poor, new immigrants will become Republicans.

As I said, 70% plus of US citizens have opposed what Jorge/Rove wanted since 1986 and before. There is still an unanswered question: will the voters finally make immigration their vote deciding issue? If so, Republicans will have surprising success in 2008. If not, the stupidity of Jorge and Rove will be largely to blame for any hard times that befall Republicans.

“See you at the bill signing.”

As Rush says, conservatism wins every time it’s tried.

I give you Jindal in Louisiana as the most recent example.

Corollary - RINOs lose every time they try.

Nonsense. If the pubbies return to 30 years in the wilderness it is entirely their fault not the voter's fault. They went to DC for a reason. They became big government instead.

I agree with you; I am sure this is why Rove and Bush were trying so hard to preemptively deal with this. This is also one reason why I believe Mike Huckabee can win the election but few others can. Tactical errors are very dangerous this time around; the GOP will alienate this group of voters to their utmost and likely permanent failure if we make this issue soundbites of anger. Unless the middle class starts marrying early and having five kids each, the Hispanic middle is the future, either as Democrats or Republicans. Flame away, but please use facts to prove that my statement on birthrates is wrong. Good luck.

Any GOP party plank should note the requirement to secure the border, period, but primarily for security reasons. Then we need to start figuring out how to KNOW who is here (which would have also been solved by the immigration bill). Chose hate; get NOTHING you want. If your candidate cannot address the Hispanic community, he's toast. Or this post just more wasted time...

Spelling more of your words correctly (assuming for the nonce that they *are* in fact yours) would ordinarily give you more credibility.

But not on this subject.

Cheers!
