I am no fan of burning coal, as it is presently done simply because of the unique pollution it produces: fly ash that is mildly radioactive and sulfur dioxide that leads to acidic rain and leaching in soil types.

Having said that, I would rather have this pollution than not have my air conditioning in July and August. I look forward to a day when the vast ocean of hydrocarbons we are blessed to have in our coal reserves can be converted into useful forms of liquid fuels as well as electricity without having this pollution.

Since today 52% of our electricity is generated by burning coal, battery powered cars = coal fired cars.

Coal plants produce a lot of CO2 and NOx (nitrous oxides).

However, algae just loves to eat both of them. And some of the kinds of algae that do so are about 50% vegetable oil by weight. Vegetable oil that can readily be turned into biodiesel.

For maybe 6-8 months out of the year North of the Mason Dixon line, and 10-11 months of the year South of there, there is enough sunlight for algae to grow. And with CO2 and NOx bubbled through their tanks, they grow a LOT.

So instead of waste that is expensive to dispose of, we get not just electricity, but FUEL, from coal burning industries.

The icing on the cake is that biodiesel is the BEST of the alternatives to petroleum fuels. It has about 96% of the energy of petroleum diesel, it works very well in powerful automobile engines yet diesel engines are scalable enough to be used to power railroad engines and ships.

And biodiesel even smells better than petroleum diesel.

That means we get lots of cheap electricity from the coal plants, we get easy to process fuel out of the deal, and we can even recycle the water the algae grows in.

To compensate for the energy lost by erasing the 151 coal-fired plants currently on the drawing board nationwide, Mazria called for intensive research efforts on solar power

How many megawatts will your "intensive research" generate senor Doctor?

"Climate change is the greatest challenge we have ever faced," he told an audience of more than 400 at the conference.

I've had it with these jokers. Who is "we"? Give these chucks a pointy stick and a loincloth, and they can go live in the woods for a few months, and then get back to the civilized world. No, the biggest challenge most of us now face is from people like this who are either invincibly ignorant MORONS or unspeakably EVIL (take your pick); ENERGY has to come from SOMEWHERE, it comes at a PRICE and is subject to SUPPLY and DEMAND. The United States is one of the most coal-rich areas in the world. Over HALF of our electric power RIGHT NOW comes from coal. If these so-called environmentalists get their way, and they probably will, then the average power bill will soon ratchet up to $400 or $500 a month, GUESS WHAT - there is gonna be some real problems for chicken little, so there is at least some consolation. Our energy "crisis" is mostly self-imposed by petty pseudo-intellectual tyrants at this point.

Maybe we should stop selling so much coal to Europe.

I don’t see nukes mentioned by these morons that are intent on taking over the energy supply.

Most any coal fired boiler with basic Filters and Scrubbers and knowledgable operators are just great for the environment. We have a lot coal - lets get it and use it.

We have oil reserves - lets get them and use them.

Nuclear Power plants are safe (certainly safer than riding in Teddy’s car) - lets build them and use them.

Want energy independence - do the obvious! Conserve and increase the supply - now thats complicated.

In the meantime expand solar energy use beyond calculators and Traffic cameras.

Remember a lot of our imported oil comes from areas of the world that are doing their best to kill us!

The U.S. has the worlds greatest reserves of coal.
Of course the America haters want us to not use it.

Gee. And we have the world’s largest supply — enough for 300 years. What a coincidence!

Let's see...

No coal.

No nukes.

No windmills.

Ethanol causing water shortages, and higher corn prices.

Just what the hell do these dorks propose?

Nice anti-American plug as the US is the “Saudi Arabia of coal”. The things that need to happen are opening ANWR, which would lead to an immediate drop in oil prizes, and more nuclear power. More people die in coal accidents every year than have collectively died in nuclear accidents. Even France uses nuclear power. We haven’t finished constructing a nuclear plant in 30 years.

Climate?

Yawn... don't ever touch these bad boyz... coal fired ovens. They're the only way to go when baking pizza. A couple of my favorite locales:

Brooklyn's Grimaldi's:

Manhattan's Little Italy district's Lombardi's:

Edward Mazria, who has led efforts nationwide to build more-energy-efficient buildings, said the only way to control global warming is "an immediate moratorium on all new coal-fired power plants in the United States" and a phaseout of older coal plants.

OK, then I'm SURE Mr. Mazria will be encouraging the construction of nuclear power plants any day now. /s
