David Phillips. Mike Jones. Greg Ruth. Tom Russell.
Four gay men, willing to put their names in print and whose allegations can't be disproved, have come forward since news of U.S. Sen. Larry Craig's guilty plea. They say they had sex with Craig or that he made a sexual advance or that he paid them unusual attention.
They are telling their stories now because they are offended by Craig's denials, including his famous statement, "I am not gay, I never have been gay." Those words, spoken on live national TV on Aug. 28, are now memorialized on a just-released-for-Christmas Talking Senator Larry Craig Action Figure.
David Phillips is a 42-year-old information technology consultant in Washington, D.C., who says Craig picked him up at a gay club in 1986 and that they subsequently had sex.
Mike Jones is a former prostitute who told the world he had sex with the Rev. Ted Haggard last year. The former Colorado Springs evangelist at first denied it but eventually confessed. Jones says Craig paid him for sex in late 2004 or early 2005.
Greg Ruth was a 24-year-old college Republican in 1981 when he says he was hit on by Craig at a Republican meeting in Coeur d'Alene.
Tom Russell, now 48, is a former Nampa resident who lives in Utah. Russell said his encounter with Craig occurred at Bogus Basin in the early 1980s.
A fifth gay man, who is from Boise but who declined to be named for fear of retaliation, offered a recent and telling account: He was in a men's restroom at Denver International Airport in September 2006 when the man in the next stall moved his hand slowly, palm up, under the divider. Alarmed,....

To borrow a phrase, they consider a homosexual conservative to be a “race traitor”.
They don’t openly use that term but you will hear “Uncle Tom” used often in print for black conservatives.
They’ve tried to extend this argument to class too. They say that “bigoted homophobes” consistently vote against their own “financial interests” because of religious superstition and moral judgements.
Enough already. He shags men.
I’m not sure where this reporter gets his facts, but I don’t believe Haggard ever confessed to having sex with Jones. He admitted a massage and buying meth, but denied he had sex.
Reading the article it seems to me that there’s very little “evidence” that anything ever happened. I feel sorry for Craig. He may or may not be gay, but to me it seems like blood is in the water and every two-bit liberal homosexual is trying to get their 15 minutes of fame.
Bogus Basin is the ski area in the mountains just above Boise.
Yes, the prequel to Brokeback mountain.
:)
Is Craig a homosexual? I think he probably is, but without a confession or video tape I can understand why some would continue to hold out hope that he isn't.
That's right on point, IJ. This whole matter has been about allegations with no proof. This contretemps has an important political component: Craig holds an important conservative slot and the libs have a lot to gain by smearing him.
If they can prove their accusations, fine. But this business of convicting a person in the press goes against every founding principle in this country. I've worked in Boise and have dealt with the Statesman. It was a wild-eyed liberal rag under its previous ownership (Gannett) and is just as liberal under McClatchey.
Many Californians and other liberal out-of-staters have migrated to Boise in the past 20 years. I think the local Demos, with their allies at the Statesman, are trying to change the political landscape in that traditionally conservative state. But the burden of proof is on the accusers.
bump
But can you prove there never HAVE been?
Sheesh, what a slut!
It is possible that I have won the Publisher's Clearinghouse Sweepstakes. But I don't think any bank is going to loan me money against the payoff check.
"Possible" doesn't mean "actual." In logic and law, the two are as far from each other as east is from west.
You’re forgetting the incident at the airport for which he was originally charged. Do you believe the police were politically motivated and that it was a setup? Can you prove it?
Are you saying Craig is not GAY? You have to be kidding.
He has done nothing to show he is anything but the worst kind of homo there is. Hiding behind his wife, hunting for young men anywhere they can be found. Then lying about all of it to everyone.
I don’t wish AIDS on anyone but if you behave like Craig has there is a good chance he could have it and give it to his wife. This proves to me he is a selfish pig who only thinks of himself.
By the fact he has has not been impeached for committing a crime and disgracing the Senate of the US, shows how sick the Republican party is right now.
Flush this guy now!
The denials began June 30, 1982, when CBS broke news of a scandal alleging gay sex between congressmen and underage pages. The following day, before any public allegation that he was involved, then-Rep. Craig issued a denial. Craig married a year later and adopted the three children of his wife, Suzanne. In 1990, the Idaho Statesman asked Craig about an allegation that he was gay made by an opponent in his first Senate race. “Why don’t you ask my wife?” Craig replied.
This is the caliber of man we h
Thank God these guys are saying this now instead of right before the election. Now Craig get out of the Senate NOW!!! Go home and you will be free to have as much gay sex as you want. GO AWAY!!!!
I don't believe it was politically motivated. I do believe it was a setup. I don't believe he committed any crime, at least none worthy of being called one. I can't prove any of those things.
But in the canon of western jurisprudence, I don't have to. The burden of proof is not on the party establishing innocence, but on the party trying to establish guilt. Craig does not need to prove he was not soliciting sex; the state has to prove that he WAS.
You may have heard the principle stated another way: "innocent until proven guilty." It is NOT "guilty unless proven innocent."
"Awesome."
Now that's fun for the whole family right there.
