London, June 2 (ANI): Hillary Clinton, the frontrunner to become the next American president, suffered serious bouts of depression when she was the U.S. First Lady in 1994.
According to former Watergate scandal journalist Carl Bernstein, Hillary also displayed persistent signs of melancholy as a student.
Bernstein quotes David Gergen, then a senior Clinton aide, as saying: "I don't know whether she was seeing a doctor or not but she was depressed" in his book -- "A Woman in Charge" in 1994, a year after her husband, Bill Clinton became president.
The book says Clinton's "emotional state" was "as fragile as it had ever been" in late 1994 after her close friend Vince Foster had committed suicide, her father had died and her healthcare proposals had been rejected.
Due to be published on Tuesday, the book, according to The Telegraph, could damage the New York senator's ambition to become America's first female president.
The claims are part of a potentially devastating portrait of a woman whom, Bernstein concludes, is controlling, aloof, dishonest and greatly flawed as a politician.
Although the Clinton campaign has attempted to dismiss the book, Bernstein's pedigree and sympathy towards the former first lady's policies make this difficult.
Advance media coverage has focused principally on suggestions that the Clintons came close to divorce in 1989. But accounts of Mrs Clinton's temper, tendency to bear grudges, lying, detachment and struggle to establish her own identity are likely to prove more damaging. The prospect of a commander-in-chief who might be prone to depression during a crisis could deter voters. (ANI)
She was not alone. Many were depressed with her as First Lady.
you’re good.
plus it cost him a VP spot...
What kind of psych meds is this hideous woman on? If she has a bad hair day will she launch some nukes?
“Unless he has some evidence that she was taking anti-depressants, or was seeing a psychiatrist, he’s merely repeating the unsubstantiated opinion of one man, David Gergen.”
That’s the first thing that occurred to me. He says himself “”I don’t know whether she was seeing a doctor or not...”. I don’t think that hearsay on this subject is going to cut it. Without some hard evidence, it might just come across as just one more attack by somebody who wants to sell books. That could ultimately add up to more points in her column.
JOnes was methodist minister. There was a lot of work done by the Methodists then and now. And admiring MLK does not make one a radical.
Alinsky is a different kettle of fish.
But the Methodists are always getting involved in social issues like racism.
Although I agree with you, the 10 or 20% of the population who suffers from depression are not running for the most powerful job in the world.Abe Lincoln did not have access to the nuclear football, and if the information isn’t put out people will never be able to make up their minds about it.
Just guessing, but I suspect the correct diagnosis for Hillary’s bouts would be possession, not merely depression. The lizard inside her is going to make us all depressed, if she gets elected. A lot of people think Hillary is just a narcissistic dyke, living with suppressed anger brought on by her masturbating, rapist, philandering husband, sort of the toad ready to explode view, but it really is worse than that. All those voices coming out of Hillary on the campaign trail may be more than dramatic condescension towards her audiences. We might be getting a peek at the multitudes living within her.
Imagine how depressed we all will be if she becomes POTUS.
Me too. Funny how that worked.
No - I don’t “know it.”
Are you an expert on mental health issues?
What a coincidence!
Millions of Americans were depressed when Clinton was in the White House.
OK, fair enough. But you can have a guilty conscience without becoming depressed. I think we all agree that Hillary shows not much evidence of a conscience. So I vote for the other two as precursors to her depression.
I think to go the route of making this a big issue is a big mistake.
The worst war in our history, on our soil, was Lincoln’s.
Sounds like the movie The Best Man.
I meant “You know there’s a big difference between a single bout and repeated bouts across the adult years.” And, if you don’t, you should.
She'll call out the big dogs...blackmail...favors...everything, and probably win the nomination.
>There's no way she'll win the general election.
Carl Bernstein will be a marked man from this day forward. His life is in danger, as is the publisher who puts this book on the street.
