Hillary Clinton suffered bouts of depression as U.S. First Lady

London, June 2 (ANI): Hillary Clinton, the frontrunner to become the next American president, suffered serious bouts of depression when she was the U.S. First Lady in 1994.

According to former Watergate scandal journalist Carl Bernstein, Hillary also displayed persistent signs of melancholy as a student.

Bernstein quotes David Gergen, then a senior Clinton aide, as saying: "I don't know whether she was seeing a doctor or not but she was depressed" in his book -- "A Woman in Charge" in 1994, a year after her husband, Bill Clinton became president.

The book says Clinton's "emotional state" was "as fragile as it had ever been" in late 1994 after her close friend Vince Foster had committed suicide, her father had died and her healthcare proposals had been rejected.

Due to be published on Tuesday, the book, according to The Telegraph, could damage the New York senator's ambition to become America's first female president.

The claims are part of a potentially devastating portrait of a woman whom, Bernstein concludes, is controlling, aloof, dishonest and greatly flawed as a politician.

Although the Clinton campaign has attempted to dismiss the book, Bernstein's pedigree and sympathy towards the former first lady's policies make this difficult.

Advance media coverage has focused principally on suggestions that the Clintons came close to divorce in 1989. But accounts of Mrs Clinton's temper, tendency to bear grudges, lying, detachment and struggle to establish her own identity are likely to prove more damaging. The prospect of a commander-in-chief who might be prone to depression during a crisis could deter voters. (ANI)

So Gergen’s word is “truth”,,what medical training does he have to diagnose “depression”.

Gergen is a slimy weasel in my mind and whatever he says is suspect.

If Vince committed suicide I am Hillary's secret double.

Bernstein cannot be trusted when he parrots the establishment line with such nonsense.

Actually what business is it of ours to see medical records that are not related to life threatening conditions?

If Hill had and STD, if she had an abnormal Pap, if she has menstrual cramps or dry vagina,,is it really your or my business.

Maybe so, but it's difficult to see why he would lie to Bernstein about that. What would be his motivation? After all, he was once a Clintonista and - with rare exception - once a Clintonista, always a Clintonista. That's why they call it the Clinton crime family.

Well, Gergen plays both sides of the fence. And who knows but he might have a desire to stick it to her,,she probably makes people feel that way.

He has no medical/psychological background to be describing her as clinically depressed.

And as an employee of the President, it was hideous that he talked to Bernstein about this. Either he is just terminally disloyal and stupid or he had an agenda. Take your pick.

Hillary and her bureaucrats should ask themselves the same question.

Gee, I wonder why?

In my opinion, Hillary was an enabler for Billy. I think the only reason she would be depressed is she saw a threat to her future power play (run for POTUS), not because Billy was unfaithful to her.

Imagine that, our very first clinically insane president. Something to look forward to.

We are choosing the next POTUS here, not some anonymous city council member. We elect the POTUS - indirectly, via the Electoral College - to serve us in many ways, the most important of which is to maintain our security against forces who would like to undermine all of what our country has been about for 200+ years. A condition that a prospective POTUS may have can impair that individual's performance in office without being life threatening. Therefore, while not all medical records of a candidate are important to voters, those related to potentially debilitating physical or mental illnesses very much are.

Have you noticed that this medical records issue generally seems to be more of a problem for Dem candidates?

Yup. The DemonRats have more STD's and illegal drug issues.

"Much ado about nothing, everyone suffers from depression at some point in their lives."

My thoughts exactly. It's manic depression [bipolar disease] that is so dangerous. Simple depression is normal human behavior.

It would be interesting to see what meds she's taking... or not taking.

There I go... talking to myself again...

Nobody even mentions Reagan’s altzheimers. I think it was evident in his last term.

That, and his other medical problems, did impact his second term. I had read that he signed (in 1985?) an Iran/Contra document while still under post-surgical pain killing medication. It led to an embarrassing scandal.

Also, his administration should have invoked the 25th Amendment when he was shot in 1981, as he was clearly unable to carry out military command decisions for some days after.

A president must have a clear mind. If Hitlery has a tendency for moping around in a depressive funk, voters need to know that beforehand.

I called my life agent to see if I could get a policy on Bernstein. Unfortunately he had already read this story.

an std is not debilitating. If you are looking at any thing that would impair performance, you are casting a broad net.

GWB was a former alcoholic, Lincoln had melancholia, Roosevelt was in a wheel chair prone to infections, Reagan had a dementia.

There is hardly a human alive without something that could possibly impair performance.

What people want here is to fish thru Hillary’s records looking for seamy stuff or imaginary seamy stuff to smear her with.

I cannot stand her but I cannot stand that tactic. Much less the holier than thou attitudes of those with one agenda only, to smear her.

If the same people focused on her actions as a political and public person, they would earn admiration.
