All the “crying wolf” over the harmless Harry Potter novels unfortunately undermines attempts to oppose real evil like the Pullman series.

Amen. But they are after the children. Just like the homosexuals do now getting into the schools. The battle is for souls.

Yeah, it was just an equally dumb comment I made to someone else in this thread about their’s.

There was no "crying wolf" about Harry Potter, as it turns out...

That’s exactly what I was thinking. It’s changed here.

I’ve already read that, and found it irrelevant.

Good for you. If you look at the responses, most other people didn't.

Be reasonable. It is was well known at the time that “Last Temptation” portrayed Christ as homosexual, or at least as having homosexual tendencies. If I know that, am I allowed to call it “vile garbage” without having seen the film?

I figure you are going to flame me for posting and running, but I do have to go to lunch. Flame away if you like, but I’ve said all I want to say on this. Have a nice week.

No flame, but your post provides a perfect illustration of my point. The movie does not portray Christ as homosexual or as having homosexual tendencies. I've been trying to think what could possibly cause such a strange notion, and I guess it's because Jesus kisses his disciples on the lips in the film.

Whoever started this ridiculous meme saw a practice still used by heterosexual men in much of the world and decided to call it a homosexual act. Heterosexual men kiss their male friends and relatives on the lips in parts of Europe and the Mideast every single day. I don't know what Mideast customs were two thousand years ago, but Jesus was not born an American man - he probably did as other men of that time and place did. Go through the New Testament and see how many times men - straight, heterosexual men - kiss each other. See how often the New Testament urges believers in Christ to greet each other with a kiss.

And thank you for proving my point.

Pullman's comments about his atheist agenda and its presence in his written works are actually supported by the books in question. Rowling's "outing" of a character is not.

Pullman can only benefit from these comparisons.

OK, back from lunch. MY, what a mess I’ve made. I should be ashamed of myself for believing others’ reports. You tell me there were no homosexual inferences in “Last Temptation”? Well then, I guess I have to believe you, then, don’t I? Oh, wait - you’ll tell me I’m ignorant if I believe you...

NOW - answer my question you so conveniently ignored:

“How about if I call a child pornograher who rapes children a “pervert”? Do I have to watch him do it to decide?”

I didn't call you ignorant, though you're obviously uninformed about a movie you call "vile garbage".

I ignored your question because it's a poor attempt at an analogy, but if it helps you, I'll play along. Feel free to call whoever you like whatever you like. Just make sure you know what you're talking about. It's a bad idea for a variety of reasons to falsely accuse an innocent person of such things based on unreliable sources and hearsay, which is what you apparently use to learn about movies.

OK, just to set the record straight, I was apparently wrong about the homosexual content of the movie. But that can be blamed on my memory of 10 years ago, not on any misrepresented information I got.

As I did a little research, it came back to me several of the things that were so objectionable about the movie, namely, the scene (imagined though it was) of Jesus kissing Mary Magdelene in bed, of him sitting outside her house, while she was plying “her trade”, etc.

My apologies for getting my facts wrong, but I still contend that good advice by trusted people can, and should on many occasions be followed, especially on important issues. In the case of the “Golden Compass”, the author himself tells God-fearing individuals that he doesn’t like us, or our God. I’ll take a pass, thank you.

I do not worry about going to the movies. Hallmark has been having some wonderful Christmas movies. There are usually 2 movies each night. If your cable has this channel start watching them. They start at 8 Central time. A Grandpa for Christmas was one of the movies last night and it was terrific.

When is “Shrek the Third” coming out on DVD?

Roger Friedman of Fox News has been hyping this movie like mad. Several weeks ago, he was already declaring it “golden” and “a smash” even before it has sold its first ticket.

An excerpt from the link above:

Flying witches, evil specters, talking bears and evolving “Dust” abound in The Dark Materials, Philip Pullman’s popular fantasy series for children. In this confusing cosmos of multiple universes, humans are linked to personal daemons, and telepathic seekers find answers to life’s mysteries through divination, Eastern meditation, ancient “wisdom” and ritual magic. These occult practices are essential to the battle for the “free” Republic — against the despised old Church.

Lyra, the pre-teen heroine, is a headstrong tomboy raised without parents at an Oxford college in a universe parallel to ours. A proficient liar, she’s first seen snooping in a forbidden area with her daemon camouflaged as a moth. From then on, she follows her intuition from one crisis to the next until all remnants of Biblical truth and authority have been destroyed. By the end of the series, God is dead. Free-spirited Lyra (still a 12-year-old) has sexually “come of age” and fulfilled her prophetic assignments in the war against Christianity.

What staggering hypocrisy is being exhibited on this thread.

On one hand, we’re being castigated for taking the word of he reviewers and author about the content of the movie yet the same people who are doing the criticism seem to expect us to take THEM at THEIR word about what the movies, plays, and books are really about.

And we should believe them over someone else because....?????
