"Make no mistake, perjury is a felony, and its commission by a President may sometimes constitute high crimes and misdemeanors. But is removal appropriate when the President lied about whether he was refreshing his recollection or coaching a witness about the nature of a sexual relationship? Is removal appropriate when the President lied to the grand jury that he denied to his aides that he had engaged in sex only as he had defined it, when in fact he had denied engaging in oral sex? Is removal warranted because the President stated that his relationship began as a friendship in the wrong year and actually encompassed more telephone encounters than could truthfully be described as 'occasional'? To ask the question is to answer it. In my opinion, these statements, while wrong and perhaps indictable after the President leaves office, do not justify removal of the President from office."
--Senator Fred Thompson, February 12, 1999

If Jesus ran for President, some would just complain that he wasn’t a true conservative because he never checked the immigration status of the 12 Apostles!
“We are left to sort out how bad a candidate can be on which issues, and still have our support.”
Exactly. You and I have differences based on which issues we believe are most important, but I respect your well-reasoned support for Senator Thompson.
I have no idea where my fascination with swinging at "pitches in the dirt" comes from, but it's there, so let's play.
First, you are not bad, you are keeping focused on your task and that is a noble thing.
I choose this post to "break in" on because of this statement by you:
His not guilty vote was based on the specious argument
I find that humorous in the extreme, because if there is one thing that Fred Thompson has always been "guilty" of, it is almost thinking too much. Indeed in many circles it is what he is most famous for, reasoned opinions on points of law.
So I am going to assume, despite what that may do to both of us, that you have only read what is on CNN etc. about this. So let's try and move into a more serious approach.
Here is Thompson's statement, his opinion on the legal aspects of his decisions. Read it carefully and read it well.
Thompson Statement on Impeachment.
Perhaps there is a reason this "conversation" has occurred almost to the point of being ridiculous in these very forums alone. Perhaps when people know the mind of the man they see the reason that went into it, the desire to not inject new precedent in order to satisfy political expediency. They may see his desire to not create a "new club" which future congresses could use to beat over the head of a future President. (Indeed a great irony, especially here on FR, but I digress)
Specious is not a term the sensible will assign to his actions or the thoughts laid out above.
Even if they do not agree.
I would be interested in what say you after a careful and thoughtful examination.
Again you justify your tear-down of a reasonable candidate with a relativistic statement. So I ask you again, if you want to tear down a liberal candidate why not tear down Rudy? With "supporters" like yourself, Huckabee is a lot less electable than Rudy is.
“One could argue that Giuliani would actually be worse than Clinton”
Hardly, unless one was a Communist.
On the contrary, if I were to start encouraging my clients to go for junk expressions like "Improve the Shining Moment," the result would be less business for them, less honesty for consumers who may need or want my clients' products, less work for me, and less prosperity for all.
A sanctimonious somebody lives in a nice cozy shell and thinks others who don't share it live in "darkness," but that somebody ain't me, I don't think!
“Im not sure Senator Thompson is the most conservative electable candidate.”
Well until Hunter or Tancredo show signs of life, he is.
There is a very long statement where Fred explained himself, and he didn’t leave anything out. It is at a University in TN where his senatorial papers are stored.
This garbage is here, and yes it does leave a lot out, is not the truth.
You’re ridiculous to impugn the character of someone based on false statements.
The perjury was handled by a judge in court and Clinton was punished for the perjury. Which is a part of what Fred said.
The Congress was not going to do anything to Clinton, Fred voted to convict on obstruction of justice, that is a vote to convict despite the lies that people say.
Which I’d have to say you look like you’re trying to do that.
You are the one using the darkness "P" word as those it was it was a mainstream word, and also was it not you who was knocking my tagline and came after me!
Until then I did not even give a thought !
Improve The Shining Moment! Don't let them pass you by...
Is a reminder to me in my personal life my high school had a motto engraved on the Building Make Hay While the Sun Shines, the school had a lot of sayings like that in the halls ways.
I use to be irked by it but now that I looked back it was once a farm community and it made sense to them.
You have no clue what goes on in my personal life and the "PRESS FORWARD MITT" is a cheer, and really has nothing to do with my personal movtivation for me to "Improve The Shining Moment! Don't let them pass you by!"
Thompson voted, "Yes" on one charge -- which you declined to mention.
One out of two; I call that half.
.
. What do you call it -- a lie?
