On Nov.30 at 01:36 a.m., a Turkish passenger jet crashed in the mountains of western Turkey, killing all 57 people on board, the private airline company Atlas Jetair said on Friday.

The plane disappeared from radar screens shortly before it was due to land at Isparta Airport, about 12 miles away. The weather conditions were good and the pilots did not report any technical breakdown. However, the plane started to land towards the mountain instead of the runway. Last conversation with the tower indicates that the pilots saw the lights of the runway clearly and started to land making a last turn. However, the MD83 type plane directed to the opposite direction and crashed into the hill.

On board were six scientists, leading in Turkey on nuclear research, including Prof. Engin Arik and Prof. Fatma Senel Boydag, among those who died in the plane. The scientists were travelling to Isparta to attend a workshop in Suleyman Demirel University.

Professor Engin Arik, from Istanbul’s Bogazici University, who died in the accident with 5 other eminent scientists, was working on a “military and industrial ray project”. Arik was planning to produce “high energy ray” at a laboratory to be established in Ankara. Arik also worked for the “Atlas experiment” at CERN, European International Nuclear Research Center.
